UCO Goes Cold In Loss To NSU

EDMOND – An untimely cold spell in the second half cost Central Oklahoma in Wednesday night's MIAA matchup with Northeastern State and the Bronchos lost 63-57.

The setback ended a five-game win streak by the Bronchos and put UCO 6-8 on the season. Central is now 1-4 in the MIAA. The Bronchos return Saturday afternoon to host Arkansas Fort Smith at 1:30 p.m. inside Hamilton Field House.

"We didn't have the offense in the second half and let this one get away," UCO head women's basketball coach Hannah Moeller said. "We played really well in the first half but you got to do it for four quarters and we didn't tonight."

Central Oklahoma led for 26:36 of the first 28:50 of the game. The Bronchos were up by as much as 11 points, 42-31, but that's when the spell hit. UCO didn't make a field goal in the final five minutes of the third quarter and the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. The 11-point lead turned into a big deficit as Central was outscored 31-6 in the 10-minute stretch. UCO was 0-for-13 in that span and trailed 62-48.

The Bronchos did make a run to get back in the game. UCO went on a 12-0 run in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to five, 62-57, with one minute remaining. But the Bronchos couldn't get any closer in the final minute and saw its win streak end.

Central Oklahoma led 20-14 at the end of the first quarter and it was 32-29 at halftime. The Bronchos never trailed in the first 20 minutes and the game was tied just three times (2-2, 7-7, 27-27). UCO had a 10-2 advantage to start the third quarter before the sudden shift in momentum swung away from the Bronchos.

Nykaiya Dillard led UCO with 21 points in the freshman's first career start. Dillard was 7-for-16 from the floor, 1-for-2 from behind the arc, and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. She also had five rebounds and four steals.

Dillard was the only player in double figures for the Bronchos. Kaitlyn McCarn scored seven points, Kendrick Bailey had five, and Peyton Walker and Jerney Bennett both scored four points.

Talia Pogi had the most of UCO's 16 bench points with six, Olivia Quapaw scored five, Harley Harbour added three, and Madison Roberts scored two.

UCO was 20-for-58 as a team, 34.5 percent, and shot 5 of 13 from 3-point range. The Bronchos were 12-for-16 at the free-throw line Wednesday night.

Central Oklahoma hosts Arkansas Fort Smith on Saturday afternoon. The Bronchos continue a four-game homestand with Missouri Southern and No. 11 Pittsburg State next week.
