Central Outlasts Fort Smith

Bronchos Win 62-54 In Edmond Saturday

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma got back in the win column with a 62-54 MIAA victory over Arkansas Fort Smith Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos improved to 7-8 on the season with the win and are now 2-4 in the MIAA. Central continues a four-game homestand next week with games against Missouri Southern Wednesday night and No. 11 Pittsburg State Saturday afternoon.

"Our defense continues to help us," first-year UCO head women's coach Hannah Moeller said. "They're giving us a chance. We didn't play great on offense today but we did enough to get the win. Every win is big and every game we find ways to win makes us better."

Central Oklahoma never trailed Saturday and led by as many as 22 points midway through the fourth quarter. Fort Smith went on a late run and cut the lead to eight with a minute to play but couldn't get any closer in the end.

Kaitlyn McCarn led UCO with 15 points and Bobbie Fouquet scored 10 off the bench. McCarn was 7-for-10 Saturday, including 1-for-2 from behind the 3-point line. She added three rebounds and two assists. Fouquet went 3-for-10 from the floor but 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and she added four rebounds.

The Bronchos got points out of 10 players. Kendrick Bailey scored seven, Nykaiya Dillard scored six, and Olivia Quapaw, Haniya Geretta and Talia Pogi all scored five. Harley Harbour added four, Jerney Bennett scored three, and Madison Roberts added two points.

Bennett had a team-high nine rebounds and six blocked shots. Dillard added six rebounds and had two steals. Geretta also swiped two steals.

Central jumped out to a big lead right out of the gate on Saturday. Dillard scored the game's first basket and UCO led 10-1 with 3:28 remaining in the first quarter. The Bronchos led 12-3 at the first break, holding UAFS to 1-for-18 shooting in the opening frame.

UCO outscored Fort Smith 14-13 in the second quarter to take a 26-16 lead into halftime. The Bronchos outscored the Lions 22-17 in the third quarter, leading 48-33 going to the fourth.

Central outpaced Fort Smith 9-5 through the first five minutes of the final quarter before the Lion rally. UAFS went on a 13-2 run to make it 59-51 with 1:09 to play, but couldn't get any closer than that.

Central Oklahoma returns to Hamilton Field House Wednesday night to take on Missouri Southern (11-4, 5-1 MIAA). The Lions from Joplin beat UCO 75-57 in Joplin last month. The Bronchos will also host No. 11 Pitt State (12-3, 5-1 MIAA) next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. UCO fell 62-59 in Pittsburg last month.
