Bronchos Pull Away From Jets In Edmond

Central Oklahoma Beats Newman 67-51 In MIAA Matchup At Hamilton Field House

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma pulled away from Newman Wednesday night for a 67-51 MIAA win at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos improved to 8-12 on the season with the win and are now 3-8 in the MIAA. UCO returns to action Saturday afternoon to face Emporia State. Tipoff from Hamilton is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

"It took us a little too long to get going but our defense held up," first-year UCO head women's basketball coach Hannah Moeller said. "We played a lot better in the second half and it was good to get back in the win column."

Central Oklahoma shot just 15.0 percent in the first quarter, going 3-for-20 from the floor. UCO led 12-6 after holding Newman to just 2-for-16 (12.5 percent) in the opening frame. The Bronchos shot 21.1 percent in the second, making 4 of 19 shots and held a slim 23-20 lead at halftime. Newman had a 16-14 lead in the second quarter.

But as the game went into the second half, Central pulled away. The Bronchos made 7 of 19 shots in the third and 7 of 15 in the fourth quarter. The three-point halftime lead was 11 heading into the final quarter before the Bronchos finished off the 16-point victory.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak. The Bronchos though have won six in a row against Newman and are 15-1 against the Jets from Wichita all time.

Bobbie Fouquet led Central Oklahoma in scoring with 16 points. She was the only Broncho in double figures. The junior forward was 5-for-13 from the floor, including a 3-for-5 mark behind the 3-point line and she also went 3-for-4 at the free-throw line. Fouquet added eight rebounds.

Jerney Bennett, Kaitlyn McCarn, and Nykaiya Dillard all scored nine points for the Bronchos. Bennett had a game-high 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. McCarn had seven rebounds and two assists and Dillard added two boards, two assists, and one steal.

Haniya Geretta added seven points off the bench, Kendrick Bailey scored six, Olivia Quapaw had four, Madison Roberts chipped in three, and Talia Pogi and Harley Harbour scored two each.

Central Oklahoma will wrap up the month of January with Saturday's game against Emporia State. The Lady Hornets play at Rogers State on Thursday night in Claremore. UCO is on the road the first weekend in February, home for the middle two weeks, and closes the season back on the road on the final weekend of next month.
