UCO Tops Newman In MIAA Matchup

Central Oklahoma Wins 74-57 With Dominant Second Half Wednesday Night In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma used one good rally in the second half to pull away from pesky Newman Wednesday night at Hamilton Field House where the Bronchos won 74-57 in the MIAA matchup.
 
UCO improved to 13-10 on the season and is now 6-5 in the MIAA. The Bronchos are back on the court Saturday afternoon to face Emporia State with tipoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
 
"We made some big shots early that kept us in the game and we were able to hit some big shots later that helped us get a good lead," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "I thought we did a good job on defense of keeping them out of rhythm and we had some guys step up for us today that really helped."
 
Central Oklahoma trailed Newman 44-42 with 17:00 remaining in the second half when the Bronchos turned out an 8-0 run and never looked back. Brady Hancuff started it with a jumper, then Parker Hannah added a layup. Hancuff followed that with a layup of his own and Hannah scored again to make it 50-44 UCO with 13:29 remaining. During the 3:21 run, Newman was scoreless and 0-for-4 from the field with three turnovers.
 
The Bronchos had an 11-4 stretch soon after that included back-to-back 3-pointers for Josh Nwankwo. UCO led by 14 points nearing the six-minute mark.
 
Central Oklahoma shot 50.8 percent from the floor in the game, making 31 of 61 shots. UCO was 8-for-17 from behind the 3-point line and 4-for-7 at the free-throw line. The Bronchos held Newman to 38.2 percent overall, 5-for-21 behind the 3-point line and forced 13 Jet turnovers in the game.
 
Nwankwo led Central in scoring with 20 points on 7 of 17 shooting. He was 4-for-7 from behind the 3-point line and 2-for-2 at the stripe. The senior guard added seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and one blocked shot.
 
Matthew Willenborg scored 19 points to go with seven boards and two blocked shots. He was 8-for-13 in the game, 1-for-4 from deep, and 2-for-2 at the line.
 
Parker Hannah and Ben Averitt gave UCO four starters in double figures. Hannah scored 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting and was 3-for-5 from outside. Averitt scored 10 points to go with six boards and six assists.
 
Brady Hancuff (eight), Jack Robinson (two), and Trey Tuck (two) helped the Bronchos off the bench.
 
Central Oklahoma and Newman went at it in the first half. The game was tied seven times in the first 10 minutes. UCO took its first lead of the game, 24-22, with 8:37 remaining in the first half.
 
Newman got back in front, the game was tied for an eighth time, then Central hit a 9-0 run on three straight 3-pointers to go up 33-27. The Bronchos led 38-33 at halftime.
 
Central Oklahoma will be back in action Saturday afternoon to take on Emporia State. The Bronchos host ESU at 3:30 p.m. UCO will turn to the final month of the season with four road games and three home contests in February.
