Central Outpaced In Hays

Bronchos Lose To Fifth-Ranked Fort Hays Squad In MIAA Road Game

HAYS, Kan. – Central Oklahoma had a tall task with the fifth-ranked team in the country Saturday in the MIAA and it was the No. 5 Fort Hays State Tigers running away from the Bronchos with a 78-65 victory.
 
Central Oklahoma's fourth straight loss puts the Bronchos at 7-12 overall on the season and 2-8 in the MIAA. Fort Hays improved to 18-1 overall and 9-1 in league play with the win.
 
The host Fort Hays squad scored first and broke a 2-2 tie with a 3-pointer to get the day started. UCO never got a rhythm going and trailed 22-10 after the opening quarter. It was 47-27 by halftime and the deficit grew after the break. Hays led 63-39 at the break. The Bronchos outscored FHSU 26-15 in the fourth quarter but it was too late.
 
Central Oklahoma's defense did force 17 Hays turnovers in the game and the Bronchos corralled 10 steals.
 
Nykaiya Dillard led UCO with 16 points and Olivia Quapaw scored 14, both off the bench. Cnetral's bench chipped in 49 points. Madison Roberts scored seven, Haniya Geretta five, Talia Pogi added four and Harley Harbour scored three.
 
For the UCO starters, Kaitlyn McCarn led the way with eight points, Peyton Walker and Jerney Bennett scored three each, and Bobbie Fouquet had two.
 
Central Oklahoma shot 38.8 percent overall, making 26 of 67 total shots. The Bronchos were 5-for-15 (33.3 pct.) from behind the 3-point line and 8-for-11 (72.7) from the free-throw line.
 
Central Oklahoma is back home next week to close out the month of January with a pair of games at Hamilton Field House. UCO hosts Newman on Wednesday, Jan. 28 and Emporia State next Saturday, Jan. 31, in Edmond.
