Central Oklahoma Drops First Home Game To MSSU

Bronchos Fall 81-75 For First Loss Of Season At Hamilton Field House

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma fell behind in the second half and could never get over the hump in an 81-75 setback to Missouri Southern Wednesday night at Hamilton Field House.
 
UCO is now 11-8 on the season following the loss – its first of the new year and its first at Hamilton this season. The Bronchos are also 4-3 in the MIAA.
 
Central Oklahoma returns to play Saturday to wrap up a four-game homestand against Pittsburg State. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. and the MIAA Game of the Week is airing live on 38 The Spot in the Kansas City television market.
 
"We just didn't play our best tonight," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We've played really well to get on a little run but tonight wasn't one of those nights and they made us pay for it."
 
Central Oklahoma led for just over 12 minutes of the game on Wednesday night. There were six lead changes and six ties. The last Broncho lead was 45-44 with 14:48 remaining in the second half. Once MSSU got in front, the Bronchos couldn't close the gap. Southern shot 53.6 percent overall and a season-best 52.2 percent from 3-point range, making 12 of 23 shots behind the arc. Central shot 47.3 percent overall and was just 8-for-22 from deep.
 
Matthew Willenborg continued to lead the Bronchos and scored 17 points on Wednesday night. Marcus Zeigler Jr. had 16, Parker Hannah 12, and Ben Averitt put up 10 points. Jack Robinson chipped in seven, Brady Hancuff and Trey Tuck both scored five, and Josh Nwankwo returned from missing six games due to injury and scored three points in nine minutes.
 
Willenborg had a team-high seven rebounds and also blocked six shots. Robinson had six rebounds and dished out a team-high seven assists. Hannah made three 3-pointers, Zeigler had two, and Willenborg, Nwankwo, and Tuck each had one.
 
Central Oklahoma hosts Pittsburg State on Saturday afternoon. The Bronchos will hit the road for just the second time this month to take on Nebraska Kearney and Fort Hays State next weekend. UCO returns home to host Newman and Emporia State to close out the month of January.
