TYLER, Texas – Central Oklahoma opened the fall portion of its season with the Tyler Invitational and each of the six Bronchos competing earned at least one win in the two-day event.
In singles play, All-American
Pete Komada won her senior season debut in straight sets, beating Natalia Gorzny of UT Tyler, 6-2, 6-2. In the Flight 1 semifinals, Komada lost to Mississippi College's Emily Buchanan, 6-2, 6-2. Komada picked up an additional win over Henderson State's Kristina Kozlova, 5-7, 6-4, 10-4.
Anika Ouwejan lost her Flight 2 quarterfinal match in three sets to UT Tyler's Hailey Zhang, 3-6, 6-3, 6-10. She came back with two wins to follow, beating HSU's Angela Dorado, 6-3, 6-1, and Tyler Junior College's Sherin Scheerle, 6-3, 6-2.
Karyna Yurchenko also lost her quarterfinal match in Flight 3, 2-6, 6-1, 5-10, to HSU's Emila Nowak. But like Ouwejan, she answered with two more wins. Yurchenko beat Luisa Moraes of UT Tyler, 6-4, 2-6, 10-8, and then Adiya Abdugappar (HSU) 6-0, 6-4.
Haley Hibbets went 1-1 in her Broncho debut. She dropped a three-set match, 4-6, 6-4, 4-10 against Mississippi College's Ann Cabot Stockett before answering back with a win. Against Henderson State's Lily Winter, Hibbets won 6-1, 6-1 for her first career victory in the Bronze & Blue.
Milana Quick went 1-2 in Tyler. She won 6-3, 6-2 over HSU's Lainey Mungle to start her career with a victory. She dropped a three-set match to Tyler Junior College's Idom Cho, 2-6, 6-3, 9-11, and then lost to UT Tyler's Sabrina Pugh, 6-1, 6-3.
Yurchenko and Quick teamed up this weekend for doubles play and the duo went 2-1. After a close 8-7 (7-5) loss, Yurchenko and Quick won 8-7 (7-4) and 8-1 in their next two matches.
Ouwejan and Hibbets teamed up and went 1-1, taking an 8-1 win in their first match before an 8-3 loss in the second.
Komada and
Ayaka Koga also went 1-1, winning 8-6 before an 8-3 loss.
