UCO Sweeps Ouachita Baptist To Finish Perfect Opening Weekend

No. 7-ranked Bronchos Beat Three Returning National Tournament Teams

TYLER, Texas – Injury-plagued Central Oklahoma completed a four-match march through the field at the season-opening Patriot Classic with a sweep of Ouachita Baptist Saturday evening.

The No. 7-ranked Bronchos rode a balanced attack to dispose of the Tigers 25-17, 25-21, 25-18 despite a series of injury woes. Returning starters Sydney Huck and Lari Migliorino along with key reserve Andrea Coady were unavailable entering the three-day event, then starter Sawyer Franz was sidelined during Saturday morning's upset of No. 5 Ferris State.

But a series of veterans and newcomers stepped up to lead UCO past Ouachita for a fourth straight sweep.

"We had a 'next one up' mentality this weekend and I couldn't be more proud of the way our team responded to the adversity we faced," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We had some key players out, but we had a bunch of new players step up and do what needed to be done. It was a great opening weekend for us and we beat a bunch of really good teams."

The Tigers were the third returning national tournament team that UCO beat in the opening weekend and it was a group effort.

Five players had at least five kills against OBU. Senior transfer Kedron Burk led the way with 11 kills, five digs and two solo blocks, while freshman Kamryn Glover knocked down nine kills and added 10 digs.

Junior Riley Roberts took over an outside hitter role due to the injury problems and collected a career-high eight kills along with 16 digs. Rookie Myla Unterweger was forced into a bigger role and came up big with eight kills and two solo blocks.

The Bronchos also got five kills and three solo blocks from Mikiah Perdue, while Lindsey Houran had 35 assists, 15 digs, five kills and two service aces from her setter position. Kaitlyn Parrott led the back row defense with 29 digs.

The Bronchos jumped on top of OBU at the outset, grabbing a quick 5-1 lead behind two kills each from Burk and Glover. The Tigers got within 9-7 when Roberts' ace capped a 4-0 run that put UCO up 13-7.

The lead grew to 18-12 on a Roberts kill, 20-13 on a Burk smash and 22-14 on a Burk block before Glover's fifth kill of the set finished off the 25-17 victory. Burk ended up with six kills in the set and Unterweger added three.

The Tigers raced to a 4-1 lead in the second set and it was back-and-forth from there until UCO broke a 16-16 tie with a 5-0 run. Perdue had two blocks and Unterweger one during that surge and Unterweger's kill closed out the 25-21 win.

It was another close battle in the third set, which featured five lead changes and 12 ties. The last of those deadlocks came at 16-all and the Bronchos responded with five straight points.

Burk slammed down three kills, while Roberts and Unterweger had once each as UCO moved in front 21-16. OBU scored twice to make it 21-18, but the Bronchos answered with four straight points to close it out as Morgan Manning served up an ace and Glover knocked down a match-ending kill.

The Bronchos make their home debut at Hamilton Field House Tuesday, hosting intrastate rival Oklahoma Baptist at 6 p.m.
