UCO Draws Midwestern 2-2 In Home Opener

Bronchos Rally To Tie The Match Late But Cannot Find First Win

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma made its home debut Thursday night and ended its non-conference match with Midwestern State in a 2-2 draw.

The Bronchos and the Mustangs are both 0-1-2 following the result.

"It's a lot harder to play from behind and we did that tonight," UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "We let them get ahead early, then again in the second half, and you can't do that. We have to come out better and put ourselves in a better position.

"We are glad to get the tie though," Muhamedagic continued. "Midwestern is a good team so to get back into the game and have a chance is good even though it's not what we wanted."

Midwestern State took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute but UCO answered quickly to tie the match. In the 24th minute, Rebecca Tweedy sent a ball into the box that the MSU goalkeeper punched out. It didn't make it far though, and Rebekah George was all alone in space in front of the goal and knocked in the tying score.

The match stayed 1-1 through halftime, with MSU outshooting the Bronchos 9-8 in the first 45 minutes. The second half played the opposite, with defenses tightening down early and the goals coming late.

Midwestern State took a 2-1 lead in the 71st minute. Down one and pressing, UCO found its way back. Elena Conaway lobbed a pass down the end line to Lauren Piper, who headed it back to George, who redirected it to Caleah Carter. The sophomore had a clean look and took it, scoring in the 82nd minute to tie the game, 2-2.

UCO had one big chance late. The Bronchos earned a corner kick with 45 seconds remaining, but the ball was sent in over the goal and out of play. Time expired soon after with the 2-2 score.

MSU outshot UCO 14-13 on the night, with a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Avery Bass played the full 90 in goal for the Bronchos and made four saves.

Central Oklahoma returns to the road this weekend. The Bronchos head to No. 7 Dallas Baptist on Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. UCO will play at Southern Nazarene next Wednesday night before its second home game of the year, Sunday, Sept. 21 against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
