UCO Knocks Off No. 1 Seed Washburn

Bronchos Beat Washburn 90-84 In MIAA Basketball Championship Quarterfinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Central Oklahoma is heading back to the MIAA Basketball Championship semifinals after a thrilling 90-84 victory over Washburn Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals at Municipal Auditorium.

Central Oklahoma, the No. 8 seed in the tournament, knocked off No. 1 seed Washburn for its first ever win over a 1-seed. UCO improved to 7-4 in the quarterfinals and is set to play Saturday at noon in the semifinals, where the Bronchos look to advance to Championship Sunday for the third time.

"We knew this was going to be a tough hill to climb but the guys were up for it and they did a great job of picking each other up today," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "Some of our guys didn't get to play as much because of foul trouble but we had others that stepped up and that's what so great about this group. We're all in it together."

JV Seat led Central Oklahoma with 31 points on 11 of 16 shooting. The junior guard hit four 3-pointers and made 5 of 7 free-throws. Israel Hart added 25 points on 8 of 12 shooting. He made on 3-pointer and was 8-for-13 at the line.

Matthew Willenborg and Parker Hannah were huge off the bench for the Bronchos on Thursday. Willenborg scored 11 points and added seven rebounds and six blocked shots. Hannah scored 10 points and was 6-for-6 at the free-throw line.

Luke Haasl added six points, Jacobi Sebock scored four, and Jordan Thompson scored two points. Ben Averitt also added one.

For Washburn, the Ichabods lost to the No. 8 seed for the first time after winning the previous eight matchups. Thursday also marked the fifth time a No. 1 seed lost in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Basketball Championship and the first since 2014. Jacob Hanna led Washburn with 29 points.

Central Oklahoma grabbed an early lead Thursday, 6-5, but Washburn quickly took it back and controlled most of the first half with the lead. The Ichabods led by as many as 13 points with 5:38 remaining in the half. But UCO had a rally in store.

UCO went on a 20-8 run to tie the game, 39-39, with 58 seconds to play before halftime. The Bronchos went ahead for just the second time 44-42 thanks to an and-1 from Seat. Washburn would tie the game with a pair of free-throws with two seconds left and the teams went to halftime tied, 44-44.

In the second half, Washburn regained the lead and led by as many as five points. But when Haasl slammed home a fastbreak dunk with 15:30 to go, getting fouled on the play and making the ensuing free-throw, UCO took a 55-53 lead. Washburn tied the game, 55-55, then again 65-65, but could never get back in front of the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma held Washburn without a field goal for 4:17 and the 65-65 game turned into an 80-69 lead for the Bronchos, their biggest of the day. While Washburn outscored UCO 15-10 in the final three and a half minutes, it was too late. UCO held on for the win.
