Central Oklahoma Wins MIAA Opener At Emporia State

Bronchos Drop Doubles Point, Win All Six Singles Matches For 6-1 Triumph

EMPORIA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma got back in the win column in convincing fashion Friday as it opened MIAA play with a 6-1 win at Emporia State.

Central is now 5-3 on the year and 1-0 in league play. Emporia State is 6-6 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA. The Bronchos continue its weekend road trip at No. 8 Washburn Saturday morning.

"While we did a great job to get the win today, we need to work on our doubles play," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "Doubles are too important and you're not always going to get all six singles. But we did get the win today and that's good because we have a big one Saturday."

UCO went down 1-0 Friday after losing both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The Bronchos did pick up a win at No. 3 doubles, 7-6 (7-2), but it was too late to get the point.

Singles were a different story.

Anika Ouwejan won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 to tie the match, then Nefeli Zafeiri won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 to put the Bronchos in front, 2-1.

Pete Komada won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 and Ayaka Koga won 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 3. Hui Soo and Karyna Yurchenko both won in three sets to wrap up the day. Soo won 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-1) and Yurchenko won 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2).

Central Oklahoma faces a tough Washburn squad on Saturday, with first serve scheduled for 11 a.m. in Topeka. The Ichabods are 9-1 on the season and one a seven-game win streak.
