UCO Just Misses Upset Bid At Washburn

Bronchos Fall 4-3 At No. 8 Washburn In MIAA Play

TOPEKA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma pushed No. 8 Washburn to the limit but couldn't get one more point before a 4-3 MIAA setback Saturday afternoon.

UCO is 5-4 on the year and 1-1 in league play. Washburn is 10-1 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA. The Bronchos return home for and will face Newman next Friday in Edmond.

"We shuffled our doubles lineup with hopes of getting that point, and we played them really close, but it didn't work out for us," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "We're playing well at singles and we still had a chance, but we still need to play better in doubles moving forward."

UCO dropped all three doubles matches, with Washburn clinching the early point with wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 1 doubles.

Karyna Yurchenko and Hui Soo lost 6-4 at No. 3 doubles. Pete Komada and Ayaka Koga, playing together for the first time at No. 1 doubles, lost 7-5. Nefeli Zafeiri and Anika Ouwejan were paired together at No. 2 doubles and lost 7-6 (8-6).

UCO trailed 1-0 heading to singles matches and needed to win four out of the six contests. Zafeiri won 6-0, 6-1 to tie the match, then Washburn went in front with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, with Soo falling there.

Koga tied the match again, 2-2, with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, but then Washburn went back in front again with a win at No. 4 singles, where Ouwejan lost 3-6, 6-2, 3-6.

Komada tied the match for a third time, 3-3, with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-0) win at No. 1 singles, knocking off the 22nd-ranked player in the country.

Unfortunately, Washburn continued its bounce-back trend and won at No. 6 singles to clinch the match, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) over Yurchenko.

Central Oklahoma has three straight home matches on the schedule. The Bronchos host Newman next Friday, then Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri next weekend in Edmond.
