UCO Misses Buzzer Beater, Loses At Emporia

EMPORIA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma missed a 3-pointer as time expired and lost 60-58 at Emporia State Sunday afternoon in the MIAA.
 
UCO forced a bad Emporia shot with seven seconds remaining and got the rebound. The Bronchos darted up the floor before calling a timeout with 1.7 seconds left in the game.
 
Central had a chance.
 
Peyton Walker inbounded the ball to Korie Allensworth at the top of the key. The senior forward took one drip and then hit a step-back 3-pointer but missed what would have been the game-winning shot.
 
UCO is now 5-16 on the season and 4-8 in the MIAA.
 
Allensworth led the Bronchos in scoring on Sunday with 16 points on 7 of 18 shooting. She went 1-for-6 from behind the 3-point line and 1-for-2 at the free-throw line. Allensworth also had eight rebounds, two steals, and one assist.
 
Talia Pogi added 15 points on 5 of 16 shooting. She hit a pair of 3-pointers and three free-throws. Karly Wadsworth scored 12 points on 5 of 15 shooting, also hitting two 3-pointers.
 
Peyton Walker added a career-high nine points to go with four rebounds and two assists. Jordyn Turner, who only scored three points on Sunday, pulled down a season-high 16 rebounds and also blocked two shots. LaKysia Johnson rounded out Central's scoring with three points.
 
UCO held a lead most of the first quarter and was up 15-11 after one. Emporia took its first lead 17-15 two minutes into the second quarter and later led 27-21 with 5:06 left in the first half.
 
The Bronchos then would hold ESU scoreless through halftime. Central ended the first half on an 11-0 run to take a 32-27 lead into the locker room.
 
Central led throughout the third quarter, and for more than eight minutes in the fourth quarter.
 
Emporia finally retook the lead, 55-54, before Wadsworth made a layup with 1:31 to play to give UCO what would be its final lead. ESU made a pair of free-throws and then a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left to build a 60-56 lead. Pogi scored with 40 seconds remaining to cut it to two points. That's when the Bronchos made a stop and an attempt at the win.
 
UCO led for 29:25 of 40 minutes on Sunday.
 
Central Oklahoma now turns to the final four weeks of the regular season. The Bronchos host Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western this week in Edmond. UCO will travel to Rogers State, then Washburn and Central Missouri on back-to-back weekends before hosting Arkansas Fort Smith and Northeastern State on the final weekend of the season.
