Bronchos Rout Fort Smith

Karly Wadsworth Set UCO Career 3-Point Record As Bronchos Fight For Playoff Spot

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma put together one of its best performances of the season Thursday night and came away with an 83-55 victory over Arkansas Fort Smith in a crucial late season MIAA contest at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos improved to 8-19 overall on the season and are now 7-11 in the MIAA. The Bronchos were 11th in KPI Standings, which the league is using to determine the 10 teams that qualify for the MIAA Basketball Championship next week in Kansas City.

UCO plays Northeastern State Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the final game of the season.

"The girls came out with a good energy, played good defense, and we hit some shots, so it was good all around," UCO head women's coach Emma Andrews said. "We know what we're capable of. We need to finish strong on Saturday and see what happens after that."

Thursday night marked a career milestone for Andrews, who is in her third season at UCO. The Melbourne, Australia native won her 100th career game Thursday night against Arkansas Fort Smith.

Another milestone came with 36 seconds left in the first half of Thursday night's game. Talia Pogi led a fastbreak up the middle of the floor and dished to Karly Wadsworth, who flared out to the wing for an open 3-pointer. The basket was good and was the 191st career 3-pointer made by Wadsworth to set a new UCO all-time record.

Wadsworth, who made her first career 3-pointer from the exact same spot on the floor November 19, 2020, passed Ami Guffey, who made 190 career threes from 1998-2002. Wadsworth, who was given a fifth-year of eligibility following the pandemic, also owns UCO records for most 3-pointers attempted in a game (15), a season (196), and a career (617).

Wadsworth finished Thursday's game with 16 points on 6 of 10 shooting. She hit 4 of 7 threes, and pulled down six rebounds.

Pogi was the leading scorer, pouring in 20 points on 6 of 9 shooting. She also hit four 3-pointers, on six attempts, and went 4-for-4 at the free-throw. Pogi also had five rebounds and five assists in the game.

Jordyn Turner also scored in double figures with 18 points on 7 of 18 shooting. She made 4 of 5 free-throws. Turner pulled down 12 rebounds to earn her seventh double-double of the season.

LaKysia Johnson made it four in double figures with 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting. Johnson had three assists, two rebounds, and two blocked shots before she fouled out after 20 minutes of game time.

Korie Allensworth (nine) and Peyton Walker (seven) also scored for UCO. Allensworth had six boards, three steals, and one assist. Walker had six rebounds, four steals, and three assists.

Arkansas Fort Smith led 5-0 early Thursday, and soon after 7-4, but the Bronchos went on a 6-0 run to get in front. The game was tied once more, 10-10, but Wadsworth hit her first 3-pointer after that and the Bronchos managed a 20-16 lead by the end of the first quarter.

UCO never trailed again. The Bronchos shot 57.1 percent in the opening quarter and were still at 47 percent, 16-for-34, by halftime. Central led 43-27 at the break.

In the third quarter, UCO hit 8 of 14 shots just like the first and continued to increase its lead. The Bronchos were up 64-42 going into the final frame. Central shot 50 percent for the third time in that fourth quarter, making 7 of 14 shots and building its biggest lead of the game, 28 points, at the final 83-55.

Central Oklahoma has one final game left in the 2024-25 season Saturday at home against longtime rival, Northeastern State. The Bronchos will honor five seniors prior to tipoff – Wadsworth, Allensworth, Johnson, Turner, and Alexis Lewis.

The MIAA will announce Saturday night the results of the final KPI Standings and the official bracket for the 2025 MIAA Basketball Championship, which will be played March 5-9 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri.
