UCO Falls At Washburn

Bronchos Lose Lead Early, Never Recover In MIAA Road Game

TOPEKA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma fell behind early and never recovered in a 75-60 loss at Washburn Thursday night.

Central Oklahoma is now 7-18 on the season and 6-10 in the MIAA.

"Once they got the lead in the second quarter, we just never could respond to that," UCO head women's coach Emma Andrews said. "We were even in the first and throughout the second half, we just couldn't cut into the lead."

UCO held the lead for most of the first quarter. The Bronchos were up or tied four times before Washburn took its first lead. Peyton Walker responded with a 3-pointer to put Central back in front, 15-13, but that would be the last lead for the Bronchos. A 7-0 run followed by Washburn. The Bronchos trailed 20-17 at the end of the first quarter, but a troublesome second quarter made matters worse for UCO.

Central Oklahoma went 2-for-10 in the second quarter with just one free-throw made on four attempts. One of the two shots made was a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer that made it 35-23, Washburn, at the break.

That 3-pointer by Karly Wadsworth gave her 184 for her career, tied with Olivia Mason (2013-17) for the second-most in school history.

Central Oklahoma didn't fare much better in the third quarter, shooting 5-for-15 overall and 0-for-4 from deep, and again made just one free-throw on five attempts. Washburn led by 19 points, 53-34, heading to the fourth quarter.

Wadsworth would hit one more 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, with 4:11 remaining, to pass Mason on the all-time list. Then she hit two more in the final minute to finish the game with four. She is now just three 3-pointers shy of the school record of 190 made 3-point field goals set by Ami Guffy (1998-2002).

LaKysia Johnson led Central Oklahoma with 15 points on 7 of 8 shooting. She was 1-for-3 at the free-throw line and also had three assists and one steal. Jordyn Turner scored 13 points, including the first eight in the game, and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Wadsworth finished with 12 points on 4 of 10 shooting, 4 of 8 from deep. Gracee Miller added five points, Parker Simonsen scored four, and Walker, Korie Allensworth, and Talia Pogi all scored three points. Jacey Crawford added two.

Central Oklahoma continues the final road trip of the season with a Saturday afternoon matchup at Central Missouri. The Bronchos return home next week for the final week of the season with home games against Arkansas Fort Smith and Northeastern State.
