UCO Narrowly Misses Top 10 Upset, Again

Bronchos Fall 62-59 At No. 8 Pittsburg State In MIAA Opener

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Central Oklahoma had the ball down by three in the final seconds, but the Bronchos couldn't get a shot off and lost 62-59 at No. 8 Pittsburg State Thursday night in the MIAA opener at John Lance Arena.

UCO is now 1-5 on the season following the loss and 0-1 in league play. Pitt State is 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA.

"For all the strides we're making we're struggling to find a way to win," first-year UCO head coach Hannah Moeller said. "To have a chance against a top 10 team on the road is a big accomplishment, but winning is the goal and we didn't get that done."

Central Oklahoma was led by freshman Nykaiya Dillard's 20 points off the bench. The Oklahoma City native was 6-for-15 from the floor and 8 of 13 from the free-throw line and she added five rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals.

Kaitlyn McCarn and Jerney Bennet both scored 11 points, with Bennett adding 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. Peyton Walker scored 10.

UCO also got four points from Harley Harbour, two from Bobbie Fouquet, and one from Madison Roberts.

Central Oklahoma was 18-for-61 from the floor in the game and just 1-for-9 from behind the 3-point line. The Bronchos made 22 of 34 free-throws on the night.

UCO had an early lead, taking a 12-5 lead four minutes into the game when Dillard scored her first basket. Pitt rallied to take a 16-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Bronchos though would never lead again. Pitt led by as many as 12 in the second quarter and took a 36-27 lead into halftime. It got back to 10 in the third quarter, then all the way down to three points, and went to the fourth quarter a 49-45 ballgame.

UCO cut the lead to two points on five different occasions in the fourth quarter before finally making it a one-point game with 54 seconds remaining, 60-59.

UCO forced a turnover, but Walker missed a layup with 21 seconds left that would have given the Bronchos the lead. After fouling, and Pitt making two free-throws, UCO had the final possession with 18 seconds to go. The Bronchos were locked up and eventually threw up a two-point attempt with four seconds left and the game ended, 62-59.

Central Oklahoma began a three-game road trip with Thursday night's matchup at Pittsburg State. The Bronchos will play at Missouri Southern Saturday at 1:30 p.m. UCO is at Rogers State next week.
