Central Wins At St. Mary's

Bronchos Beat Rattlers In San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – Central Oklahoma picked up its first road win of the season with a 54-42 triumph at St. Mary's Thursday night in a non-conference matchup.

The Bronchos also have an official win streak with their second consecutive victory. UCO is 3-7 on the season and continues the short, two-game road trip Saturday at Sul Ross State in Alpine, Texas.

"We did a really good job on defense tonight and did enough on offense to get the job done," first-year head women's basketball coach Hannah Moeller said. "It wasn't perfect by any means but this is a really good point for us to get a road win against a really good team. This game will for sure be helpful in our growth moving forward."

Central Oklahoma had three players score in double figures with Olivia Quapaw's 14 leading the way. Bobbie Fouquet scored 11 and Kaitlyn McCarn had 10 points. Jerney Bennett scored seven points to go with six rebounds and six blocked shots.

The Bronchos didn't score for nearly five minutes in the first quarter until Nykaiya Dillard off the bench hit a jumper with 5:14 to play in the opening frame. But the Bronchos got going out of the media timeout and Quapaw scored eight points in the final four minutes, including one 3-pointer and three free-throws at the end of the frame that put the Bronchos up 15-10 after the first break.

When UCO went ahead with 20 seconds remaining, on the Quapaw 3-pointer, the Bronchos never trailed again.

Central Oklahoma outscored St. Mary's 17-14 in the second quarter, extending the lead to eight points at halftime. While StMU cut into the lead with a 15-12 advantage in the third quarter, the Broncho defense tightened the clamps in the final 10 minutes.

St. Marys, which was receiving votes in this week's WBCA Top 25 coaches' poll, went 1-for-13 from the floor in the fourth quarter, including an 0-for-4 mark from behind the 3-point line. The host Rattlers of the Lone Star Conference were 1-for-4 at the free-throw line in the final 10 minutes.

Kendrick Bailey also scored eight points to help the Bronchos and hit two of Central's four 3-pointers. Dillard finished with four points.

Central Oklahoma shot 36.5 percent overall, 23.5 percent from behind the 3-point line, and 70.6 percent from the free-throw line, going 12-for-17 from the stripe. The UCO defense held St. Mary's to 26.8 percent overall, 19.0 percent from deep, and just 66.7 percent at the line in its own gym.

The Bronchos play at Sul Ross State Saturday for the first time against the new Division II school. Central Oklahoma will break for Christmas following this weekend's game and return to Hamilton Field House with a home game Dec. 30 against McPherson.
