UCO Comeback Stalls At Rogers State

Bronchos Erase 17-Point Deficit But Lose MIAA Road Game

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Central Oklahoma's sputter in the second quarter created a deficit it couldn't overcome Thursday night as the Bronchos lost 66-63 to Rogers State in MIAA play.

UCO is now 1-7 on the season following the loss and 0-3 in the MIAA. The Bronchos will detour from conference play for the final four non-conference games of the season, beginning next week in Edmond against Evangel (Mo.).

"We put ourselves in a bad spot tonight and you can't do that and expect to win," first-year head women's basketball coach Hannah Moeller said. "I will say I'm proud of the response. We fought back and we had a chance to finish it off, but we shouldn't have been in that position in the first place."

Central Oklahoma led 8-0 in the first quarter before Rogers not only made its first basket but responded with a run. The host Hillcats took an 18-13 lead into the first break of the night. Then the second quarter began and UCO found itself in trouble.

The Bronchos made just 2 of 16 shots in the second, falling behind by as many as 17 points, 35-18, as the game went to halftime.

Central put together a solid third quarter, outscoring Rogers by 11, including an 8-0 run to end the frame, and trailed by just six points, 52-46, going into the final 10 minutes.

Rogers pushed it back to 10 points early in the fourth quarter, but Nykaiya Dillard scored 10 straight points to ti the game, 56-56, with 4:39 remaining.

But it would be for the Bronchos in the end. Rogers got back to six points before holding on for the 66-63 victory. It was the first ever for RSU against Central in 13 meetings.

Dillard led the Bronchos with 25 points off the bench. The freshman guard made 9 of 18 shots, one 3-pointer, and 6 of 7 free-throws. She also had four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Kaitlyn McCarn was also in double figures with 14 points, six boards, two assists, one block and one steal. And Jerney Bennett gave the Bronchos a big game with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocked shots.

Kendrick Bailey and Bobbie Fouquet added five points each and Olivia Quapaw gave the Bronchos four off the bench.

Central Oklahoma hosts Evangel next week before heading to Texas for a pair of Lone Star Conference matchups at St. Mary's (Dec. 18) and Sul Ross State (Dec. 20). UCO wraps up the non-conference portion of its schedule, and the 2025 portion of its schedule, Dec. 30 against McPherson (Kan.) in Edmond.
