Bronchos Extend Season With Road Playoff Win

Central Oklahoma Beats Central Missouri 2-1 In MIAA Quarterfinal

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Central Oklahoma beat Central Missouri 2-1 Sunday afternoon in the MIAA Women's Soccer Championship quarterfinals to extend its season by at least one more game.

The Bronchos entered the eight-team postseason tournament as the No. 6 seed and traveled to No. 3 UCM for the first-round matchup. UCO fell behind 1-0 on an own goal, but tied the match before halftime and won it with a second goal just over an hour into the match.

"So proud of this team for playing the way they did today," UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "We know how hard it is to beat Central Missouri, especially on their field, but we didn't let that be the focus today. We played our game and got it done and we aren't done yet."

It was a chaotic start to the postseason in the MIAA. Regular season champion and No. 1 seed Pittsburg State lost 3-2 to No. 8 seed Northeastern State. And No. 2 seed Washburn lost 3-2 to No. 7 seed Emporia State. The Bronchos made it three upsets with their win. No. 4 seed Missouri Western trailed No. 5 Northwest Missouri 1-0 until the 84th minute and eventually advanced on PKs following the 1-1 tie.

UCO has done it with defense all season and that was the case on Sunday. Central Missouri didn't have a true shot on goal. The host Jennies took only nine total shots and the one on goal was the UCO own goal.

In the 34th minute, UCM headed a ball toward the UCO goal and Calynn Harbert tried to clear it off the line. She turned and kicked the ball but it hit the post and bounced back into the goal for the own goal to make it 1-0, UCM.

But Central Oklahoma didn't let that change the game.

In the 41st minute, Elena Conaway took a shot from inside the box and UCM's keeper made a diving save. However, she deflected the ball back into the field and freshman Sophia Gaskins poked the rebound into the back of the net for the equalizing score.

UCO had another chance in the 66th minute. Caleah Carter stabbed at a ball at the same time as a UCM defender and it found Rebekah George with open space. She took a shot and put it on the top shelf for the game-winning goal.

Central Oklahoma outshot Central Missouri 14-6 in the game and put seven shots on goal. The host Jennies did manage nine corner kicks to UCO's one but that advantage didn't matter to the Bronchos.

UCO improved to 9-5-5 on the season with the win. The Bronchos will play Emporia State on Thursday at noon in the semifinals and looks to avenge a 2-0 loss to ESU in Edmond earlier this season. Missouri Western and Northeastern State will play at 3 p.m. Thursday. The 2025 MIAA Women's Soccer Championship final will be played Saturday at 2 p.m. in Wichita.
