Bronchos Win Finale, Head To Postseason

Central Oklahoma Beat Newman 2-0 Wednesday Night

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma put a bow on a Senior Night celebration Wednesday night in Edmond with a 2-0 win over Newman in the final game of the 2025 regular season.

With the win, UCO clinched the No. 6 seed in the MIAA Women's Soccer Championship, which begins with the quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon. Central Oklahoma (8-5-5, 6-3-3 MIAA) will travel to No. 3 seed Central Missouri (10-4-4, 7-2-3 MIAA) with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.

"It took us a little too long to get one through but we finally did and then got another, that was a good way to go out for our seniors," UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "We got our 10th shutout in 18 games and now we get to keep playing in the playoffs. They'll all be tough from here on out but it's one game at a time, survive and advance."

Central Oklahoma outshot Newman 23-9 but it took nearly 80 minutes to get a goal.

In the 79th minute, Central Oklahoma freshman Jane Lockhart took a corner kick. Evelyn Sydnes headed in a shot that nearly crossed the end line, but a Newman defender saved it. The ball bounced back to the top corner of the box, where Lockhart found it and took a shot, putting home the game's first score to give UCO a 1-0 lead.

Moments later, Central had another chance.

This time it was senior Lauren Piper. She got a pass from Izzy Van Zanten in the box and used her left foot to put a ball past the diving Newman goalkeeper and made it 2-0 in the 81st minute.

Avery Bass needed to make only one save in 81 minutes of play to earn her 10th shutout and eight win of the season. Senior Jimena Guevara came on for her first career appearance and played the final nine minutes, making two saves to preserve the clean sheet.

Central Oklahoma moves to the MIAA Women's Soccer Championship for the 13th consecutive season. The Bronchos won the league's postseason tournament in 2018 and 2019. UCO's last win over Central Missouri came in the 2019 semifinals in Warrensburg.

The winners of four quarterfinal matches played Sunday afternoon will meet in Wichita, Kansas for the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 13 with the league's postseason championship match scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 15.
