Bronchos Outpaced by UCCS

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma first half lead disappeared just before the break and the Bronchos couldn't keep pace with UC Colorado Springs in the second half before falling 80-66 in the non-conference game at Hamilton Field House.

Central Oklahoma dropped to 1-4 on the season and now turns to conference play next week. The Bronchos open MIAA play at No. 2 Pittsburg State Thursday night and will also play at Missouri Southern and at Rogers State the first two Saturdays in December.

"This was going to be a tough game for us even if we played really well," UCO head women's basketball coach Hannah Moeller said. "They're a really good team that you can't make mistakes against and we needed a lot more than we got tonight."

UCO shot 40 percent from the floor and just 25.0 percent from behind the 3-point line, going 5-for-20 from deep. The Bronchos were 17-for-25 at the free-throw line and outrebounded UCCS 43-32, but 20 turnovers plagued Central Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon.

UCO's largest lead of the game was 17-12, after one free-throw to start the second quarter. The Bronchos led 27-26 with 2:28 left to play until halftime but didn't score again and UCCS ended the first half on a 4-0 run.

Colorado Springs outscored UCO 27-18 in the third quarter to extend the lead and cruised to the win in the fourth quarter. The visiting Mountain Lions held their biggest lead of the game, 80-60, in the final 90 seconds before a pair of 3-pointers by the Bronchos got it to the final, 80-66.

Nykaiya Dillard led UCO with 16 points and Kaitlyn McCarn added 15 points. Jerney Bennett, who scored seven, had 14 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Bobbie Fouquet added nine points, Talia Pogi scored eight, Olivia Quapaw chipped in six points, Kendrick Bailey scored three, and Peyton Walker rounded out the scoring with two.

Freshman Haniya Geretta didn't score, but had seven rebounds and two assists in 14 minutes. Fouquet added six boards and McCarn had four boards to go with two steals. She and Bailey both swiped two to lead the Bronchos.
