No. 8 UCO Falls To No. 3 Lopers In MIAA Semifinals

Bronchos Eliminated by Hot-hitting Nebraska-Kearney

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Central Oklahoma had no answer for high-powered Nebraska-Kearney in Friday's MIAA Volleyball Championship semifinals at Civic Arena.

The No. 3-ranked Lopers made just six hitting errors and had a .400 attack percentage in handing the No. 8 Bronchos a 25-20, 25-16, 25-16 setback. Opponents were hitting just .141 against UCO entering the contest and no team had hit better than .291.

The Bronchos committed 22 errors in hitting just .129, their second-worst percentage in 32 matches this season.

UCO fell to 27-5, while the Lopers improved to 28-3 in moving into Saturday's finals against No. 7 Washburn. The winner of that match earns the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division II national tournament, though UCO is expected to receive an at-large bid when that 64-team field is announced Monday evening.

"Kearney was just too good for us tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We didn't play very well offensively or defensively, but they had a lot to do with that.

"Hopefully our body of work will allow us to keep playing. I think we have proven that we're one of the best teams in our region."

The Bronchos captured last year's MIAA Tournament title and then went on to claim the Central Regional crown in advancing to the national quarterfinals.

Sydney Huck carried UCO offensively, hitting .286 with 17 kills and five errors in 42 attacks. The senior standout moved into seventh place on the school's career kills list with 1,427.

Sawyer Franz and Myla Unterweger had four kills each, while Mikiah Perdue, Kedron Burk and Lari Migliorino contributed three apiece. Lindsey Houran passed out 32 assists and Kaitlyn Parrott had 11 digs.

UCO led only once in the first set, that coming at 4-3 after a Unterweger kill. The Lopers came back with four straight points to go up 7-4 and UNK led 13-10 before an error, Huck's kill off an attempted block and a Houran ace tied it.

It was deadlocked again at 14 following Houran's dump kill and at 15 when Migliorino and Roberts teamed up for a block. The Lopers scored two straight to take a 17-15 lead, UCO got within one at 18-17 on Perdue's kill and then UNK put it away with a 3-0 run.

Huck kept the Bronchos afloat in that set, hitting .563 with an incredible nine kills and no errors in 16 attacks, with UCO managing just six other kills.

Migliorino had a kill and ace while Huck and Roberts added kills as UCO grabbed a 5-3 lead in the second set and it was a 7-5 advantage following Roberts' ace. The Lopers came back with three unanswered points to go ahead 8-7 before Perdue tied it on a bullet down the middle.

UNK then ripped off five straight points to grab a 13-8 lead and the Bronchos couldn't answer back.

Central led 3-2 early in the third set after Parrott's ace and again at 4-3 on Kamryn Glover's deep drive, but it was all UNK after that. The Lopers went on a 6-0 run to take a 9-4 lead and the Bronchos got no closer the rest of the way.
