Bronchos Outrun Mustangs For Moeller's First Win

Central Oklahoma Wins 65-52 Over Midwestern State In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma beat Midwestern State 67-52 Thursday night to earn Hannah Moeller her first win as head coach of the Bronchos.

UCO (1-2) led for 39:20 on Thursday night in the non-conference contest where all 13 players got time on the floor and 12 scored a basket.

"We got a little bit from everyone tonight and you love to see that as a coach," Moeller said. "It wasn't the prettiest, but we got it done. We're going to celebrate this for a moment and then get ready for the next one because we still have a lot of work to do."

Moeller was hired in April and brought three players back from last year's squad with 10 newcomers into this season. A loss to a Top 25 team in the opener last Friday was followed by a narrow two-point defeat on Saturday. Now, Moeller is in the win column.

Central Oklahoma played all 13 on Thursday and 12 of them scored. Six of those players made at least three buckets.

Kaitlyn McCarn led the team with 10, Olivia Quapaw, Jersey Bennett, and Nykaiya Dillard each had nine points, and Bobbie Fouquet scored eight points. Talia Pogi added seven and Kendrick Bailey scored three. Peyton Walker, Harley Harbour, Haniya Geretta, Parker Simonsen, and Madison Roberts all scored two points. Emeria Adams missed one shot in three minutes of action.

The Bronchos shot 42.2 percent as a team and were 7-for-25 from behind the 3-point line. UCO was 4-for-9 at the free-throw line. Central assisted on 16 of 27 baskets and had eight steals and eight blocks.

Central Oklahoma led 5-2 just 90 seconds into the action on Thursday and Midwestern State responded with a short 4-0 run to take 6-5 lead. The Bronchos responded with a 6-0 run and MSU's only lead of the game last all of 15 seconds. Bennett's layup with 1:42 to play in the opening frame gave the Bronchos a 16-9 lead and it was 16-11 at the first break.

MSU cut it back to one point early in the second quarter, but the Bronchos kept in front and closed the frame with an 8-3 run to take a 33-24 halftime lead. The 2:42 half-ending run was capped off with a Fouquet 3-pointer at the buzzer.

UCO opened the second half with another 8-3 run, this one over 4:14, and led 41-27 midway through the third quarter. An 11-0 soon followed that put UCO up 52-31 and it was 54-32 heading to the fourth quarter.

While UCO didn't score in the final 3:02 of the game, the Bronchos were never threatened in the fourth quarter as everyone got a chance to play and most scored in earning Moeller her first win as a Broncho.

Central Oklahoma will continue its season-opening five-game homestand with No. 10 Harding on Monday night at Hamilton. The Bronchos wrap up the stretch with UC Colorado Springs next Saturday.
