Central Oklahoma Drops Second Home Contest

Bronchos Fall 61-59 To St. Cloud State Saturday In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma lost a late lead and missed out on its first win of the young season Saturday falling 61-59 to St. Cloud State on the second and final day of the Central Region Challenge at Hamilton Field House.

UCO (0-2) and SCSU (2-0) traded the lead four times in the opening quarter, but the visiting Huskies from Minnesota led for almost the rest of the way. The Bronchos took the lead back 3:10 to play in the fourth quarter, however, St. Cloud State got it back with 13 seconds remaining and hung on for the win.

"Saturday was better than Friday but we still have some work to do," UCO head women's basketball coach Hannah Moeller said. "We shot the ball a little better, but not good enough. Our defense was a little better, but not good enough. It's a growing process and we know we're going in the right direction."

Central Oklahoma shot 39.0 percent from the floor overall, making 23 of 59 shots, and went 6-for-16 from behind the 3-point line for a 37.5 percent rate. The Bronchos were 7-for-15 at the free-throw line, a 46.7 percent mark.

Kaitlyn McCarn and Nykaiya Dillard led UCO with 12 points apiece. The sophomore McCarn went 5-for-12 with one 3-pointer and one free-throw. She added three assists, one rebound and one steal. The freshman Dillard went 4-for-13 with one 3-pointer and was 3-for-3 at the line. She added four rebounds and one assist.

Bobbie Fouquet scored eight points, Olivia Quapaw had seven, and Harley Harbour scored six points. Kendrick Bailey added four, Talia Pogi and Peyton Walker had three, and Jerney Bennett and Madison Roberts scored two each.

Fouquet's seven rebounds led the way for the Bronchos and Harbour pulled down six boards. UCO outrebounded SCSU 39-34 in the game.

Central Oklahoma trailed 18-15 after the back-and-forth first quarter. It was 37-28 at halftime. The Bronchos had a big third quarter, outscoring St. Cloud State by five to cut into the deficit and head to the final frame down 55-51.

In the fourth quarter, the Bronchos jumped on the Huskies.

St. Cloud started with a free-throw, but the Bronchos went on an 8-0 run to take a three-point lead. Fouquet and Bennett scored baskets before Dillard hit two free-throws to give the Bronchos a 57-56 lead. She made a layup with 2:24 remaining to push it to 59-56, however, UCO never scored again.

SCSU cut it to one, 59-58, with 1:21 to play, then scored a layup with 13 seconds remaining to go up one and made the and-1 free-throw to get to the final, 61-59. Dillard missed a layup with five seconds remaining and got her own rebound, but the Bronchos turned it over with an offensive foul with one second left in the game and St. Cloud got away with the win.

UCO opens the season with five home games. The Bronchos return on Thursday night, Nov. 20, against Midwestern State. UCO will also host No. 25 Harding and UC Colorado Springs later in November.
