UCO Concedes President's Cup

Bronchos Fall 28-21 In Rare Loss To Northeastern State

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma couldn't convert numerous chances to come from behind and lost 28-21 to Northeastern State Saturday night in Edmond.

It's the first time since 2013 the Bronchos have conceded The President's Cup to the school from Tahlequah. UCO, now 4-4 on the season, still owns a 54-28-2 advantage in the all-time series.

"We had more than enough chances to get it done and we didn't," UCO head football coach Adam Dorrel said. "Our offense couldn't get it done and our defense let up at the wrong time. Give credit to Northeastern they deserve the win tonight."

Central Oklahoma trailed 14-0 early in the second quarter and 21-7 late in the third quarter, but stormed back to tie it up, 21-21, with 3:45 to play in the game. But NSU responded with a 4-play, 81-yard scoring drive to take the 28-21 lead with 1:48 remaining.

The Bronchos drove down to the NSU 12-yard line but threw an interception with 50 seconds remaining that ended the game.

Central Oklahoma outgained Northeastern State 510-376 in total offense. The Bronchos outrushed NSU 316-202 and had a 194-174 advantage in the pass game. Central also had more first downs than NSU, 25-20, but couldn't overcome two interceptions and a 3-for-13 performance on third downs.

Jett Huff was 23-for-39 passing for 316 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Ashton Schumann hauled in 12 passes for 109 yards and one score. Dominique Dunn had four receptions for 72 yards and the other touchdown. Kristian Valeriano added four catches for 73 yards.

William Mason led UCO's rushing attack with 102 yards on 15 carries. Jaylen Cottrell had 10 for 41 yards, and Dev Mathews had 37 yards on seven carries with one touchdown.

Dunn's TD catch with :36 remaining before halftime put the Bronchos on the scoreboard 14-7. Schumann's 15-yard touchdown reception with eight seconds left in the third quarter made it 21-14, and Mathews' 8-yard touchdown rush with 3:45 left in the game tied it, 21-21.

Connor Johnson led UCO's defensive efforts with eight tackles. David Williams, Reese Roller, and Chris Fitzpatrick totaled six tackles each. Daniel Ekwese had five tackles and one interception – UCO's only turnover of the game.

Central Oklahoma turns to November with a 4-4 record and three games remaining. The Bronchos play at Nebraska Kearney next weekend before hosting Missouri Southern Nov. 8 in the home finale. UCO visits Missouri Western in the final game of the season Nov. 15 in St. Joseph, Mo.
