UCO Pulls Away From Newman

Bronchos Beat Jets 80-56 In MIAA Game

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma dominated the second half to pull away from Newman Saturday with an 80-56 victory in MIAA play inside Hamilton Field House.

The win improved UCO to 4-9 on the season and 3-1 in the MIAA.

"Proud of our girls for playing the way they did today," UCO head women's coach Emma Andrews said. "We were tied at halftime so for them to come out and play the way they did in the second half was big."

A 32-32 ballgame changed in a hurry in favor of the home team on Saturday. The game was still close four minutes into the third quarter, but a 10-0 UCO run followed to break it open. Talia Pogi hit a 3-pointer, LaKysia Johnson sank a pair of free-throws, then Pogi hit a second 3-pointer and Johnson's layup with 3:05 left made it 52-40.

Pogi and Johnson led UCO with 21 points each. The junior from Mustang, Pogi, went 7-for-16 from the floor, 4-for-8 from behind the arc, and 3-for-5 from the free-throw line. The senior from Altus, Johnson, went 7-for-9 shooting overall and at the free-throw line. Both had three rebounds and Johnson added three steals too.

Central Oklahoma outscored Newman 19-12 in the first quarter, 25-14 in the third quarter, and 23-10 in the final frame in earning the 24-point win on Saturday. It's the largest win for the Bronchos since beating Newman by 35 points last season in Edmond.

UCO shot 51.9 percent from the floor on Saturday, making 27 of 52 total shots. The Bronchos were 8-for-16 from behind the 3-point line and 18-for-24 on the free-throw line.

Jordyn Turner finished with 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds, and Karly Wadsworth scored 12 points with a pair of 3-pointers to give UCO four in double figures. Turner added three blocks and two assists to her stat line. Wadsworth had two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Parker Simonsen scored four points, Peyton Walker three, Jacey Crawford two, and Gracee Miller one to round out the scoring.

Saturday's game featured six ties and eight lead changes. Newman held a 32-29 lead with 2:01 left in the second quarter. Miller hit one free-throw and Turner two to tie the game heading to halftime. That was the last tie of the game and Newman's 32-31 lead moments earlier would be their final lead of the game.

Central Oklahoma hits the road for the next two weeks as MIAA play gets going. The Bronchos will visit longtime rival Northeastern State in Tahlequah on Thursday before heading to Arkansas Fort Smith on Saturday to face the newest league member.
