UCO Wins At Newman

Central Oklahoma Bookends January With Victories Against Newman

WICHITA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma got back in the win column Thursday night with a 64-44 victory in an MIAA matchup at Newman.
 
The Bronchos snapped a six-game losing streak to improve to 5-15 on the season. UCO is also now 4-7 in the MIAA.
 
Karly Wadsworth led UCO in scoring with a season-high 18 points. The senior guard was 7-for-14 from the floor, 1-for-7 from behind the 3-point line, and 3-for-7 from the free-throw line. Wadsworth played a season-high 31 minutes and added two assists and a steal.
 
Jordyn Turner and LaKysia Johnson both scored 10 points to give UCO a trio of double-figure scorers Thursday night. Turner pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds. Johnson had seven rebounds and dished out three assists to go with a steal and a block.
 
Parker Simonsen and Korie Allensworth both scored nine points, and Talia Pogi scored eight points, to round out the six scorers for Central on Thursday.
 
A 10-2 run that started with a Wadsworth 3-pointer gave UCO an early lead. The three put UCO up 7-6. Newman led 8-6 moments later, but Simonsen added a 3-pointer, a jumper, and two free-throws in the next 90 seconds and the Bronchos led 14-8.
 
The freshman scored a career-high seven points in the first quarter. She added two more in the third quarter and finished with nine points.
 
Newman did outscore Central Oklahoma 17-13 in the second quarter to take a 31-29 halftime lead. The Bronchos responded with a big third quarter, 17-10, to regain the lead early and hold on for good.
 
The Bronchos put together an incredible 18-3 fourth quarter, holding Newman to 0-for-14 shooting, 0-for-10 from behind the 3-point line. The Jets only scored with three free-throws in the final period.
 
Simonsen finished the game 3-for-3, hitting her only 3-point attempt and both free-throws. She pulled down four rebounds and dished out one assist. Allensworth was 4-for-11, hit one 3-pointer, and pulled down five boards. Pogi went 3-for-8 and grabbed six rebounds.
 
UCO continues a week away from home. The Bronchos visit Emporia State – on Sunday afternoon – to wrap up the two-game getaway. Central Oklahoma returns home next week to host Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western.
