UCO Comes Up Short In Upset Bid

Central Oklahoma Falls 81-72 To No. 11-Ranked Fort Hays State Squad

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma put up its best fight against the 11th-ranked Fort Hays State Tigers Saturday afternoon Hamilton Field House but couldn't pull off the upset and settled for an 81-72 loss.
 
The Bronchos are now 4-15 on the season with a 3-7 record in the MIAA after losing their sixth straight game. UCO hits the road next week to face off against Newman and Emporia State.
 
"If we can play like that every game, we're going to come away with a win," UCO head women's basketball coach Emma Andrews said. "We didn't get it done today against a really good Hays team. But I like the fight we showed today. We played pretty good."
 
Central Oklahoma and Fort Hays State traded seven leads Saturday afternoon in a tough game that was tied five times. UCO's last lead was late in the third quarter.
 
The Bronchos led 43-34 with 7:17 left in the third quarter, and still 49-48 with three minutes remaining. But that's when Hays tied the game with an and-1 as part of a 13-0 run that put UCO behind for the rest of the day.
 
Trailing 58-54 heading to the fourth quarter, the Bronchos tied the game with four straight to open the frame. UCO tied it again 60-60 with 7:48 remaining, but Hays pulled away in the end. The visiting Tigers led by as many as 15 points with 90 seconds remaining. UCO outscored FHSU 8-2 in the final stretch to get to the final 81-72.
 
Talia Pogi led UCO with 19 points on 6 of 18 shooting, including a 3-for-9 mark from behind the 3-point line. She was 4-for-4 at the free-throw line, a place Central excelled at Saturday. Pogi also had three rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block.
 
Korie Allensworth scored 15 points on 6 of 11 shooting. She was 3-for-4 at the free-throw line. Allensworth pulled down six rebounds and had two assists and a block before fouling out.
 
LaKysia Johnson and Karly Wadsworth both scored 12 points. Johnson was 4-for-9 with one 3-pointer and three free-throws. Wadsworth was 5-for-12 with a pair of threes. Both had three rebounds.
 
Jordyn Turner, who scored nine points, led the team with 11 rebounds. Turner was 4-for-14 from the floor and made her only free-throw attempt. She added two assists and two steals.
 
Peyton Walker's five points rounded out the scoring for Central Oklahoma. She had four rebounds in the first four minutes of the game with a put-back layup as the Bronchos got off to a hot start. Walker also had two steals and one assist on the afternoon.
 
Central Oklahoma finished the day 27-for-70, going 7-for-26 from behind the 3-point line. The Bronchos were 11-for-14 from the free-throw line.
 
Saturday's first quarter had two big swings. After UCO started 4-0, Hays went on an 11-0 run. The Bronchos responded with a 13-2, hitting 5 of 6 shots including three treys. UCO led 17-16 at the end of the first quarter.
 
Both teams led by as much as three points in the second quarter, with Central taking a 35-32 lead into halftime. The Bronchos opened the second half on an 8-2 run to build the 43-34 lead early in the third quarter.
 
Central Oklahoma has a pair of road games next week. Thursday UCO plays at Newman, which it beat Jan. 4 in Edmond. The Bronchos will play at Emporia State on Sunday, Feb. 2 in the only meeting of the year between the two schools.
 
UCO returns to Edmond Feb. 6 & 8 to host Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western.
