UCO Outpaced In Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. – A rare second-quarter misfire cost Central Oklahoma in an MIAA road game at Missouri Southern Thursday night when the Bronchos lost 68-52.

UCO is now 4-12 on the season and 3-4 in the MIAA. The Bronchos look to snap a three-game losing streak at No. 12 Pittsburg State Saturday afternoon.

Thursday in Joplin, Central Oklahoma led 13-12 with two and a half minutes left in the first quarter. A 6-2 run by MSSU gave the hosts the 18-15 advantage at the first break. Then a second quarter spell fell over the Bronchos.

The NCAA transitioned to four quarters in women's college basketball ahead of the 2015-16 season. Thursday is the first time since UCO has been held without a basket in a single quarter.

The Bronchos went 0-for-10 from the floor, 0-for-3 from behind the arc, and then, with 42 seconds left until halftime, went 1-for-2 at the free-throw line. LaKysia Johnson made the second of two shots at the line to give Central Oklahoma its first and only point of the quarter.

Central Oklahoma did respond. Coming out of halftime, the Bronchos started the third quarter on a 12-0 run. Missouri Southern would level it out though, controlling the rest of the game on its way to victory.

UCO and MSSU split the season series, 1-1, with the home team winning both league matchups.

The Bronchos ended the night 38.2 percent from the floor, making 21 of 55 total shots. UCO hit 3 of 14 3-pointers and went 7-for-8 at the free-throw line.

Johnson led the Bronchos with 18 points in her second start of the season. The senior guard was 8-for-17 from the floor and ended up 2-for-3 at the line. She also had three rebounds and one steal.

Talia Pogi added a dozen points on 4 of 10 shooting and Korie Allensworth scored 10 on 5 of 11 shooting. Jordyn Turner, who scored eight, pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and had two blocked shots and a pair of assists.

Peyton Walker and Alexis Lewis were the only other two to score for the Bronchos on Thursday and both had two points. Walker added three assists and two steals.

Central Oklahoma plays at Pitt State Saturday afternoon. The men's game will be played first and is scheduled for 1:40 p.m. The MIAA TV Game of the Week airs live on 38 The Spot. The women's game is scheduled for 3:40 p.m.
