Bronchos Fall In Fort Smith

Central Oklahoma Loses 85-74 At Newest MIAA Member, Arkansas Fort Smith

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Central Oklahoma let a fourth quarter lead slip away for the second time in as many games and it cost the Bronchos in an 85-74 loss at Arkansas Fort Smith Sunday afternoon.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday before a winter storm caused the delay. Sunday afternoon, UCO held a lead midway through the fourth quarter. Fort Smith, the newest members of the MIAA, took the lead for good with six minutes remaining, outscoring the Bronchos 17-5 in the final stretch.

"We were with them for almost the entire game, and even in the end we weren't out of it," UCO head women's basketball coach Emma Andrews said. "We just couldn't get a stop when it mattered most. It's been a long weekend, and I think we're ready to get home and reset before another road trip next week."

Jordyn Turner led Central Oklahoma with a career-high 28 points. The senior forward from Oklahoma City was 10-for-13 from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the 3-point line, and she also went 4-for-6 at the free-throw line.

She accounted for almost all of UCO's free-throws on Sunday. The team went 5-for-8. LaKysia Johnson, a senior guard, scored 15 points and was 1-for-2 at the line.

Korie Allensworth added 11 points, Karly Wadsworth and Talia Pogi both scored eight, and Peyton Walker and Alexis Lewis both scored two points.

Central Oklahoma shot 49.2 percent from the floor overall on Sunday, making 30 of 61 total shots. UCO was a combined 9-for-26 from behind the 3-point line for a 34.6 percent mark, and 5-for-8 at the line, a 62.5 percent mark.

Central Oklahoma held a 20-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. Fort Smith responded with a 30-point second quarter and took a 46-41 lead into halftime. The Bronchos answered back, outscoring UAFS 24-17 in the third to take a two-point lead heading to the final frame.

Up 69-68 with 6:20 remaining, a Fort Smith 3-pointer gave the host Lions the lead for good.

Central Oklahoma continues a four-game road trip next week with a trip to Missouri Southern on Thursday night and Pittsburg State on Saturday afternoon. The Bronchos will play second on Saturday at PSU, with the men's game tipping off at 1:30 p.m. live on 38 The Spot as the MIAA Game of the Week.
