No. 23 Bronchos Top UT-Permian Basin In Season Opener

Three Players Had 10-plus Kills As UCO Earns 10th Straight Season-opening Win

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Jenna Karp knocked down 16 kills to lead Central Oklahoma past Texas-Permian Basin Friday morning as the No. 23-ranked Bronchos opened the 2024 campaign at the Kathleen Brasfield Invitational.
 
UCO took the first set 25-18 before the Falcons claimed the second set 25-23 to even the match. But the Bronchos responded, earning 25-17 and 25-22 victories in the final two sets to finish off their 10th straight season-opening win.
 
"I thought we did a lot of good things and beat a good team," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We made some mistakes, but that's to be expected in the first match of the year. We have another tough match coming up and will need to play better."
 
UCO is back in action at 6 p.m. against host Angelo State before finishing the weekend Saturday against New Mexico Highlands and Fort Lewis.
 
Karp was Central's catalyst against the Falcons. The senior middle blocker hit .500 in the match with 16 kills against just two errors in 28 attacks while adding four blocks and a service ace.
 
Mikaela Garvin was solid in her debut with the Bronchos, collecting 12 kills and three blocks, while Addison Wimmer had 10 kills and 13 digs. Sawyer Franz chipped in eight kills and Sydney Huck added six.
 
Lindsey Houran guided the offense, passing out 42 assists to go along with 14 digs and three kills. Riley Roberts had 11 assists and 11 digs, while Katie Le dug up 30 UTPB attacks to pace the back-row defense.
 
Karp sparked UCO's opening-set win with four kills in five tries to along with a pair of blocks, while Franz had three kills.
 
The Bronchos trailed 4-3 early before Karp slammed down two kills and added a solo block in a 10-1 spurt that made it 13-5. UCO was up 23-14 after a Franz kill, but the Falcons reeled off four straight points to get within 23-18.
 
Franz and Karp then slammed the door with back-to-back kills to secure the 25-18 first-set victory.
 
The Falcons ended the second set with a 6-1 run to even the match, but UCO was up to the task in taking the final two sets and the match.
 
The Bronchos trailed most of the early going in the third set before ripping off eight unanswered points to turn a 13-11 deficit into a 19-13 lead. Franz and Mikiah Perdue teamed up for consecutive blocks during that run, which ended with a Wimmer ace.
 
Karp and Garvin had two kills apiece and a combined block the rest of the way as UCO finished off the 25-17 win.
 
It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the fourth set. Karp slammed down back-to-back kills to break a 20-all deadlock, Huck followed with a kill and Roberts delivered an ace to put the Bronchos on top 24-20.
 
UTPB saved two match points before Houran's dump kill at the net ended the season-opening victory.
