First-Year Head Coach Amel Muhamedagic Wins First Career Game In Season Opener

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Central Oklahoma opened the 2024 season in thrilling fashion Thursday running away with a 4-1 victory at Southwestern Oklahoma State.

The first win of the season is the first career win for new head coach Amel Muhamedagic. He was a part of 211 wins for the Bronchos over the past 17 seasons and now has his first has a head coach.

"Great way to open up and get a road win," the winning coach said. "We played well in certain areas of the game and we were able to finish some quality chances. We look forward to getting on the road on Sunday again."

Central Oklahoma put the pressure on from opening kickoff and quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third minute. Rebekah George finished off a play that Rebecca Tweedy and Harmony Turner were given assists for setting up.

The early goal set the tone for the game.

UCO outshot SWOSU 10-5 in the first half and the continuous pressure on offense led to another first-half goal. Turner scored in the 30th minute to give the Bronchos a 2-0 lead.

After halftime, the lopsided offense continued to favor the Bronchos. UCO outshot SWOSU 6-3 in the second half as it controlled the game throughout the day.

An early rally in the second half by a freshman put the game away for the Bronchos. Caleah Carter, an Edmond native playing her first collegiate game, started at the top of the field and had a dominating run through Southwestern scoring twice in less than 10 minutes. The first came in the 55th minute and Tweedy got her second assist in the game. Carter struck again in the 62nd minute on an unassisted take that made it 4-0 UCO.

Southwestern took eight total shots in the 90-minute contest. The Bulldogs got one through for a goal in the 84th minute to prevent the shutout by the Bronchos.

Avery Bass started in goal for Central Oklahoma and made two saves in 67 minutes. Olivia Vigil played the other 23 minutes in goal for the Bronchos and didn't see another shot beside the 84th-minute free-kick goal for SWOSU.

Carter led the Bronchos with five total shots in the game. Turner took three shots as the Bronchos worked to the 16-8 advantage.

Central Oklahoma will play a second road non-conference game to open the season. UCO travels to Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas this weekend. The Bronchos make their home debut next week with two non-conference matches against Angelo State and Dallas Baptist.
