Bronchos Use Late Rally To Gain Lead, Hold On For Victory

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma used a late flurry of goals to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish Wednesday night as the Bronchos beat Southern Nazarene, 2-1, at Tom Thompson Field.

Central Oklahoma improved to 3-2-0 on the season with the win and now moves to its final non-conference game of the season Sunday night against Oklahoma Christian. That match is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. in Oklahoma City.

"We would have liked to not give up the goal in the end and get the shutout," UCO head soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "But we still got the win so we can enjoy that. The offense did a good job of pressing as the game went on. The team knew we needed to do that and they did a good job of it."

Central Oklahoma and Southern Nazarene were tied 0-0 at halftime – and for much of the second half too. But then the Bronchos finally broke through.

In the 75th minute, Madison Linavong fielded a pass from Albany Adair in the middle of the field just above the box. She turned, had space, and fired a shot that beat the keeper and put the Bronchos up 1-0.

Just moments later, in the 78th minute, Adair had open space and she fired a shot from 30 yards out, grazing the top of a defender's head just enough to break over the goalkeeper's outstretched arms.

UCO 2, SNU 0.

Southern Nazarene did get one in the back of the net late. In the 86th minute, a free kick from JQ Molgaard bounced in the box and Adison Johnson flicked it over the UCO keeper into the net for the score to make it the final, 2-1.

Olivia Vigil played the full 90 in goal for the Bronchos and made three saves in the game. SNU took 11 total shots but only put four on goal. Central Oklahoma took 14 shots on the night and put six on goal.

UCO wraps up its first home stand of the year and will now hit the road for the next three. The Bronchos play at Oklahoma Christian on Sunday night, then will travel to Washburn and Emporia State for the first two MIAA contests of the season. Central Oklahoma returns home in October and will be back on Tom Thompson Field Oct. 4 & 6.
