Bronchos Blast NSU In Season Finale

Central Wins 7-0 Over Northeastern, Heads To Postseason

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma wrapped up its regular season Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 whipping of longtime rival Northeastern State in an MIAA dual at Broncho Courts.

UCO won all nine matches contested on Sunday, taking all three doubles battles for the first point before sweeping 6 of 6 singles matches.

The win is the third in a row for Central Oklahoma, which is now 8-9 on the season. The Bronchos finished the MIAA scheduled with a 4-4 record, pulling into a tie with Northeastern State for fifth place in the league standings.

UCO will be the No. 5 seed in the MIAA Women's Tennis Championship, scheduled for May 3-5 at Edmond Center Court. The Bronchos will play the No. 4 seed in the six-team postseason tournament. That spot is still being contested Monday.

Sunday in Edmond, it was all UCO.

Blythe Buntrock and Pete Komada, the 26th ranked doubles team in the country, picked up a quick 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Karyna Yurchenko and Anika Ouwejan added a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, and Nefeli Zafeiri and Ayaka Koga picked up a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles.

As the match shifted to singles play, the Bronchos quickly turned a 1-0 lead into a 3-0 advantage.

Komada, ranked No. 69 in the latest ITA Singles Top 75, won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles before Koga won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 6 singles, putting UCO on the cusp of victory.

Zafeiri, Buntrock, Yurchenko, and Ouwejan all won their first sets, however, NSU rallied and forced a third set in all four matches.

Ouwejan fought back first, winning 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to clinch the match and put UCO ahead 4-0.

Buntrock won 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and Yurchenko won 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 4 singles to make it 6-0, UCO.

Finally, Zafeiri, now ranked No. 59 in the ITA Singles Top 75, fought back for a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles to give UCO the perfect 9-for-9 day on the courts.

Central Oklahoma now heads to the postseason looking to continue its three-match win streak. The Bronchos won regular season MIAA titles in 2021 and 2022, and UCO won tournament titles in 2019, 2021, and 2022. Central looks to avenge a first-round exit in last year's postseason tournament.
