Bronchos Fall In MIAA Tournament

Season Ends For Central In First Round Of MIAA Women's Tennis Championship

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma's season came crashing to an end Friday evening in the first round of the MIAA Women's Tennis Championship at Edmond Center Court.
 
The Bronchos lost 4-2 to Washburn, ending the 2024 campaign with an 8-10 record.
 
UCO got a win at No. 3 doubles before Washburn took No. 1 doubles. The third and deciding match went 7-5 in favor of WU, putting the Bronchos behind 1-0 early.
 
Washburn made it 2-0 with a win at No. 5 singles, but the Bronchos got on the board with a win at No. 3 singles. The points alternated again as WU went in front 3-1 with a win at No. 2 singles, but the Bronchos got another point back with a win at No. 4 singles.
 
Washburn's three-set win at No. 1 singles clinched the match as UCO was on the ropes in the third set at No. 6 singles too.
 
"Hats off to Washburn, they were the better team today," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "The girls played well, we just weren't able to get it done."
 
Nefeli Zafeiri and Ayaka Koga picked up the 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Blythe Buntrock and Pete Komada fell 6-4 at No. 1, and Karyna Yurchenko and Anika Ouwejan fell 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.
 
Ouwejan dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 5 singles before Buntrock won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Komada then fell 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles while Yurchenko picked up a three-set win, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, at No. 4 singles.
 
Zafeiri lost 5-7, 6-3, 3-6 as Washburn clinched the match. Koga was down 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 1-5 at No. 6 singles when the match ended.
 
Washburn advances to play No. 1 seed Nebraska Kearney Saturday in one semifinal. No. 2 Missouri Western and No. 6 Northeastern State will face off in the other semifinal. The 2024 MIAA Women's Tennis Championship match is scheduled for Sunday at 10 a.m.
