UCO Gets Past Newman, 4-3, In MIAA Dual

Bronchos Win First Home Match Of The Weekend, Turn Attention To Emporia State

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma snapped its losing streak with a 4-3 win over Newman Friday afternoon in an MIAA dual at Broncho Courts.

UCO swept all three doubles matches for an early 1-0 lead, then picked up wins at Nos. 3, 4, and 6 to pick up the win.

The Bronchos are now 6-9 on the season with a 2-4 record in the MIAA. Newman is 12-10 on the year and also 2-4 in league play.

"Today was a good win for us," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "We were without one of our players due to injury, so it was good to see the team step up and get it done. Hopefully this will be the start of some good momentum for us."

Karyna Yurchenko and Anika Ouwejan picked up a quick 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles before Blythe Buntrock and Nefeli Zafeiri won 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. That clinched the doubles point for the Bronchos. But Ayaka Koga and Manon Hallemans added a 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 3 doubles for the sweep.

In singles play, Yurchenko and Ouwejan carried the Bronchos again. Yurchenko played No. 3 and won 6-4, 6-3, and Ouwejan at No. 4 won 6-2, 6-0.

Koga added the fourth point with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles to secure the win for the Bronchos.

Zafeiri dropped a 7-5, 6-1 contest at No. 1 singles, Buntrock lost 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Hallemans lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.

Central Oklahoma has two home matches this weekend and will look to make it two home wins Saturday when the Bronchos welcome Emporia State to Edmond for another MIAA dual.
