UCO Beats Rogers, Takes Series

Bronchos Win 8-2 In Game 3 Rubber Match Sunday In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma cruised past Rogers State Sunday afternoon in the MIAA series finale, earning an 8-2 victory and the series win over the in-state rival Hillcats, 2-1.
 
UCO improved to 32-10 on the season with the win and 18-9 in the MIAA.
 
"We pitched it a lot better today and that was the difference," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We did just fine at the plate this weekend, but our pitching was inconsistent. It was good today and we needed it to get the series win."
 
Caleb Burchfield got the start, and the win, throwing 5.0 innings on Sunday and only allowing two hits and one run. He struck out four on the day. Racer Felter and Denton Whiteside got through another inning before Austin Burda threw 1.2 innings out of the bullpen. Felter didn't give up a hit and walked one batter, but he also struck out another. Whiteside gave up a single to the only batter he faced. Burda gave up one run on one walk, but didn't give up a hit and struck out one batter.
 
Valek Cisneros came on to pitch with two outs in the eighth inning. He got a ground ball to get out of a jam, then retired the Hillcats in the ninth, including a strikeout looking to end the game.
 
Kaleb Glass and Carson Carpenter both went 3-for-5 on Sunday to lead the offense. All six hits were singles. Glass had two RBIs and two runs scored. Carpenter had one RBI and one run scored.
 
Caden Robertson went 1-for-3 with a solo home run. He finished with two RBIs. Ryan Strickland went 1-for-3 with a three-RBI triple. And Wyatt Gray went 1-for-2 with three runs scored. Cameron Uselton also scored on an 0-for-3 day.
 
Robertson's solo homer in the bottom of the first gave UCO a 1-0 lead. Glass singled to left in the third, scoring Gray to make it 2-0. Then Strickland hit his triple to score Uselton, Carpenter, and Glass to make it 5-0.
 
Rogers got its only run on a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning.
 
In the fifth, Robertson reached on a fielder's choice and scored Glass on the play to make it 6-1. In the sixth, it was Carpenter's single up the middle that scored Gray to make it 7-1.
 
A bases-loaded RBI groundout in the top of the eighth gave RSU its second run of the day, but the Bronchos got that back in the bottom half when Glass singled to left again to score Gray and make it the final, 8-2.
 
Central Oklahoma is 32-10 with seven games left in the regular season. The Bronchos will travel to Arkansas Tech on Tuesday for the final non-conference midweek of the year, then UCO heads to Washburn for a three-game MIAA series next weekend.
 
The Bronchos wrap up the regular season with a three-game series against Northwest Missouri April 26-28.
 
The 2024 MIAA Baseball Championship begins the following weekend with the top four teams in the final standings hosting a best-of-three series. The four advancing teams will meet in Pittsburg, Kansas May 10-12 for a double-elimination tournament to decide the league champion.
