Ritz Powers No. 9 UCO To Sweep Of Griffons

EDMOND (March 22) – Terin Ritz drove in eight runs behind a three-homer barrage to spark streaking Central Oklahoma to a doubleheader sweep of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Missouri Western Friday afternoon.

Ritz had a homer and three RBI in a 9-3 first-game victory while also picking up the pitching win, then belted two homers and had five RBI in the nightcap as the No. 9-ranked Bronchos rallied for a 6-5 triumph.

UCO stretched its winning streak to 17 in a row with the sweep, improving to 24-6 overall and 6-0 in the league in dropping the Griffons to 18-8 and 4-2. The Bronchos return to Gerry Pinkston Stadium at noon Saturday to face Northwest Missouri.

"Missouri Western is a good team and gave us everything we wanted," head coach Cody White said. "It wasn't looking too good in the second game, but this group didn't flinch and they just kept battling. Those were two really good wins."

MWSU turned four walks and three hits into five runs in taking a 5-2 lead in the fourth inning of the second game, but the Bronchos answered back in emphatic fashion in the fifth to surge back in front.

Rylee Anglen and Rylee Lemos had back-to-back infield singles with one out and then Ritz came through with a dramatic two-out, three-run shot that tied it. The junior star drove the first pitch she saw to right field for her 12th homer of the season.

Jacee Minter kept the rally going with a triple to left-center and McKenna Johnson's single to right put UCO on top 6-5.

Shelby Beard allowed one base-runner in the final two innings to finish off the comeback. The freshman gave up two hits while striking out four in 3.2 innings of relief work to earn the win, improving to 2-0.

Ritz had two of UCO's seven hits and gave the Bronchos a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Emily Deramus reached on a one-out walk before Ritz blasted a moon shot over the center field wall, stretching her hitting streak to 18 straight.

Johnson went 3-for-4 to lead UCO's 13-hit attack in the opener, while Lemos, Minter and Ritz had two hits apiece. Minter also drove in four runs.

Lemos got the Bronchos going in the bottom of the first like she has so many times before with a lead-off infield single – extending her hitting streak to 14 in a row – and a stolen base. She raced home on Johnson's two-out single down the left field line to make it 1-0.

UCO extended that to 3-0 in the third when Deramus led off with a double to right-center and Ritz followed with her 10th home run of the season, this one a shot to center field.

MWSU scored twice in the top of the fourth to get within 3-2, but the Bronchos responded with a four-run eruption in their half of the inning.

Lemos ignited a two-out rally with a single through the right side and went to second when Deramus was hit by pitch. UCO then ripped off three straight hits, getting an RBI single from Ritz, a two-run double down the right field line from Inter and an RBI single from Johnson.

The Griffons made it 7-3 with a two-out solo homer in the top of the sixth, but again UCO answered in its next at bat.

Deramus reached on an error to start the inning and Minter blasted a two-run homer an out later, her 10th of the season. It was also Minter's 44th career dinger, moving her into second place on the school's all-time list.

Ritz earned the pitching win, scattering five hits while striking out six and walking none. She improved to 12-2 with her 11th straight win.
