UCO Trips In Mississippi

Bronchos Fall 4-3 At Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. – Central Oklahoma saw an early season win streak come to an end Tuesday with a 4-3 loss at Mississippi College.

UCO is 4-3 on the season following the loss. The Bronchos will play West Alabama Wednesday in a non-conference neutral site matchup at Mississippi College.

"Today was tough," UCO head tennis coach Joe Vann said. "We had a chance and we let it slip away. We'll learn from this and get better from this. It stings now, but we've got to focus on bouncing back tomorrow."

Central Oklahoma led 1-0 after doubles play, picking up wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The Bronchos had a 2-0 lead, and a 3-2 lead, before MC rallied for the win.

UCO's 23rd-ranked doubles team of Blythe Buntrock and Pete Komada picked up a 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 1 Doubles Tuesday, and Nefeli Zafeiri and Ayaka Koga won 6-3 at No. 2 Doubles to give UCO the early point. Karyna Yurchenko and Anika Ouwejan dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 3 Doubles.

Buntrock, ranked No. 71 in the country in the ITA Singles Top 75, picked up another win on the day at No. 3 Singles, taking a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory. Koga also won 7-5, 6-3.

But Mississippi College would take the rest. Zafeiri lost 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 Singles and Ouwejan lost 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 Singles.

Komada and Yurchenko both went three sets in their matches. No. 1 Singles player and 46th-ranked Komada lost 6-3, 3-6, 0-6 and Yurchenko fell 4-6, 7-5, 6-7 at No. 4 Singles.

West Alabama is currently ranked No. 7 in the country in the ITA rankings. UWA is 7-5 on the season and has four players ranked individually.
