UCO Crushes Fort Smith

Central Oklahoma Continues Long Road Trip With 7-0 Win In Arkansas

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Central Oklahoma earned wins up and down the lineup Saturday in a 7-0 win over future MIAA member Arkansas-Fort Smith.

The Bronchos improved to 4-2 on the season with the non-conference win – the third in a row for Central. Fort Smith is 2-10 this season.

"We played really well at every position," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "We needed that. We've been good at some spots and not where we want to be at others, but today, we had a good showing at all positions and that's a good sign. We're happy about today's win."

UCO jumped out to a 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles competition. Blythe Buntrock and Pete Komada, ranked No. 23 in the country, won 6-0 at No. 1 Doubles. Nefeli Zafeiri and Ayaka Koga won 6-4 at No. 2 Doubles, and Karyna Yurchenko and Anika Ouwejan won 7-5 at the No. 3 spot.

There wasn't much push back in Singles play either.

Komada won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 Singles, earning the 46th-ranked player in the country her second consecutive win after an 0-3 start to the year.

Buntrock, ranked 71st in the latest ITA Singles Top 75, won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 Singles. Zafeiri won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 Singles to give UCO the 4-0 lead and the win.

Yurchenko picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 Singles, Ouwejan won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5 Singles, and Koga swept the day for the Bronchos with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6 Singles.

UCO, with a 10-match road trip spanning more than a month of the early part of the 2024 season, continues its time away from home this week with a trip to Clinton, Mississippi for two more non-conference duals. The Bronchos are scheduled to play Mississippi College Tuesday, March 19 and West Alabama Wednesday, March 20 in Clinton.
