Gallant UCO Comeback Try Falls Short

EDMOND (Feb. 3) – Alexis Martin fueled a frantic second-half comeback that got Central Oklahoma close, but the Bronchos fell short at the end in dropping a 64-58 decision to Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

UCO trailed by 25 (40-15) six minutes into the third period before Martin came off the bench and got things going. The freshman guard -- who had scored just 17 points all season -- erupted for 18 points the rest of the game in leading an improbable rally.

The Bronchos got within three at 61-58 with 49 seconds left, but couldn't complete the upset. UCO missed its final two shots and the Lions hit 3-of-4 free throws to hold on in staying atop the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association standings.

"I was really proud of the way the kids hung in there and kept fighting," head coach Emma Andrews said. "We didn't have much going our way, but Alexis gave us a big spark. We forced some turnovers at the end that gave us a chance."

The Bronchos fell to 5-16 on the season and 4-11 in league play. MSSU improved to 17-4 and 13-2.

Martin finished with 20 points, hitting 6-of-13 shots with three 3-pointers and 5-of-6 free throws while adding seven rebounds and two steals. Alena Wilson was the only other player in double figures, finishing with 10 points, nine boards and four steals.

Reagan Fox and Gracee Miller chipped in eight points apiece and Natalie Stice had seven points with four steals.

UCO trailed 27-15 at halftime and came out stone cold to start the third, missing four shots and two free throws while also committing six turnovers. The Lions pounced, scoring 13 unanswered points in pushing their advantage to 40-15 with 4:02 left in the quarter.

The Bronchos got six points from Stice and five from Martin during a 16-5 run to cut the deficit to 12 at 45-33 by the end of the period and a Martin trey early in the final stanza had it down to 10 (46-36).

UCO couldn't get closer than that and the Lions appeared safe when their lead grew to 14 at 61-47 with 2:15 left, but the Bronchos wouldn't go away.

Fox made a pair of foul shots to start a furious 11-0 spurt that included five points from Wilson and four from Martin, who made a layup in traffic with 49 seconds left to make it 61-58.

UCO ran out of magic at the end, missing a pair of 3-point tries in the final 30 seconds while the Lions sealed the game by making 3-of-4 foul shots.

The Bronchos go on the road next week with games at Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State.
