Central Comes Up Short Against Northwest

UCO Falls 77-72 At Hamilton Field House In Thursday MIAA Matchup

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma came up short in its MIAA matchup with Northwest Missouri Thursday night at Hamilton Field House with the Bronchos losing 77-72.

UCO is now 7-20 on the season and 6-15 in the MIAA. The loss eliminated the Bronchos from postseason contention as Central shifts its attention to the final game of the 2023-24 season Saturday afternoon against Newman.

"We played with great energy and we really battled all the way through," UCO head women's coach Emma Andrews said. "I'm proud of the team. Even though it didn't go the way we wanted to, they gave it their best efforts. And we'll give it all we have on Saturday too."

Central Oklahoma is one game behind Washburn for the 10th and final playoff spot, however, with just one game left and no tiebreakers scenarios to benefit UCO, the Bronchos will remain 11th in the league standings at the season's end. Central Oklahoma hosts Newman Saturday at 1:30 p.m. inside Hamilton Field House. The Bronchos will honor five student-athletes prior to tipoff playing in their final college basketball game.

Thursday night, Central Oklahoma and Northwest Missouri battled back and forth with 14 lead changes in the game. The game was also tied 10 times. But UCO lost the lead late in the third quarter as NWMSU ended the frame on an 8-2 run.

UCO had a 46-45 lead with two minutes left in the third quarter. Northwest got four in a row before a pair of Broncho free-throws, then four more in a row to close the frame put Central behind 53-48 with 10 minutes left to play.

Central Oklahoma could not get back on top. The Bronchos were within three right away in the fourth but couldn't get closer than five points the remainder of the way.

UCO shot 43.1 percent from the floor on Thursday, making 25 of 58 total shots. The Bronchos sank 12 3-pointers on 26 attempts for a 46.2 percent rate. And UCO added 10 free-throws on 17 attempts, a 58.8 percent rate.

Caley Young led UCO in scoring with 19 points. The fourth-year junior forward from Jones went 8-for-14 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. She added four rebounds, two assists, and one blocked shot.

Alexis Martin and Karly Wadsworth, both from Oologah, both scored in double figures on Thursday. Martin scored 14 points, going 4-for-8 from the floor. Almost all of her shots were 3-pointers, where she went 4-for-7. Martin also went 2-for-4 at the free-throw line and had one rebound, one assist, and one steal. Wadsworth, who led UCO with three steals, scored 13 points and was also 4-for-8 from the floor. She went 2-for-6 from behind the 3-point and 3-for-7 from the free-throw line.

Reagan Fox scored eight points, sinking both of her 3-point attempts in the game. Natalie Stice scored six on a pair of 3-pointers before fouling out. Alena Wilson and Aliyah Llanusa both scored five points and Lexi Foreman added two points.

Llanusa (six) and Wilson (five) led UCO in rebounding and Llanusa also added five assists.

Central Oklahoma is looking to sweep the season series against Newman. The Bronchos are 9-1 all-time against the Jets from Wichita, Kansas.
