Central Oklahoma Ends Hoops Season With Win

Bronchos Beat Newman In 2023-24 Season Finale

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma put away a rocky start and blew out Newman 86-51 Saturday afternoon in the final game of the 2023-24 season.

UCO ended the year 8-20 overall, and 7-15 in the MIAA. The Bronchos finished 11th in the final standings, just outside of the top 10 that make the postseason. Newman also concluded its season Saturday and finished the year 2-25 overall and 1-21 in the MIAA.

"I think the girls were excited even though it was our last game," UCO head women's coach Emma Andrews said. "We just wanted to have fun and send our seniors out with a win and we did that. It was good to end with a win even though we're not playing next week."

Natalie Stice led the Bronchos with 17 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. She was honored prior to tipoff as she wrapped up her sixth and final season of college basketball. Stice, from Tahoka, Texas, went 6-for-14 from the floor and 3-for-8 from behind the 3-point line, as well as 2-for-2 at the free-throw line.

Aliyah Llanusa, who played her 134th career game Saturday, was also honored before tipoff. She finished with 13 points, four steals, three rebounds and three assists. Llanusa went 5-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. Llanusa's 134 games played in her five-year career is a school record.

Freshmen Gracee Miller and Alexis Martin both scored 11 points. Miller was 4-for-6 from the floor and 3-for-5 from the line. She also had three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Martin went 4-for-7 from the floor and 3-for-5 from deep. Martin added a team-high nine rebounds, two assists, and two blocked shots.

Karly Wadsworth chipped in nine points, going 3-for-10 from the floor. She hit two 3-pointers and one free-throw and also had three rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Caley Young was also honored before the game. The fourth-year junior is graduating and moving on from basketball. Young, from Jones, scored eight points and pulled down five rebounds.

Megan McClendon is another fourth-year junior graduating and moving on and she was also honored before the game. She scored five points on 2 of 8 shooting. Tayler Factor also scored five, and Lexi Foreman added three points.

Reagan Fox, Alena Wilson, LaKysia Johnson, and Talia Pogi played sparingly before a wild sequence near the end of the first half. With 2:10 left to play, Young fouled a Newman player and the two exchanged shoves and both received technical fouls for the heated back and forth. Unfortunately for Central Oklahoma, Fox, Wilson, Johnson and Pogi all came off the bench onto the floor during the exchange and were subsequently ejected from the game for the action. Fox scored two points on two free-throws, and Wilson and Johnson both had one point.

Central Oklahoma got off to a slow start in the game. The Bronchos trailed 16-11 after the first quarter when UCO shot just 3-for-13 from the floor, including 1-for-6 from outside the arc.

But UCO responded with a 22-11 second quarter to take a halftime lead and the Bronchos never looked back. Newman's last lead in the game was moments after the skirmish with two minutes left in the second quarter.

UCO led by six at halftime, then outscored the Jets from Wichita, Kansas 53-24 in the second half as the Bronchos ran away to their biggest victory of the season.
