Bronchos Win Two Non-Conference Duals, Including Top 25 Win

TYLER, Texas – Central Oklahoma picked up a pair of non-conference wins this weekend, including a win over a Top 25 opponent, as the Bronchos continued a month-long road trip.

Central Oklahoma beat UT Tyler 4-1 on Saturday as the host-Patriots welcomed UCO for the weekend. The Bronchos also faced No. 14 St. Mary's on Sunday and battled to a 4-3 victory.

"I'm really proud of the team for how hard they worked this weekend," UCO head tennis coach Joe Vann said. "These were two tough matchups this weekend and to come away with two wins is big for us. The girls played really hard and it paid off."

Saturday, against Tyler, UCO won the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Nefeli Zafeiri and Ayaka Koga won 7-6 (7-4) at No. 2 and Karyna Yurchenko and Anika Ouwejan won 6-4 at No. 3 to get the early point for the Bronchos.

Central's sixth-ranked doubles team of Blythe Buntrock and Pete Komada lost in a tiebreaker at the top position, 7-6 (7-5).

UCO picked up wins at Nos. 4, 5, and 6 to clinch the match. Tyler got its only point of the day with a win at No. 2 singles, and Nos. 1 & 3 went unfinished.

Yurchenko won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, Ouwejan won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5, and Koga won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 to clinch the win for the Bronchos.

But the Bronchos had a big response waiting in singles play.

Ouwejan also needed a third set, but perservered to get UCO in the win column. The freshman from the Netherlands won 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (4) to earn the win.

Koga was downed in straight sets at No. 5 singles, 7-6 (6), 6-4, and Buntrock's match also went three sets at No. 3 singles. The senior lost 6-0, 6-7 (6), 4-6.
