Bronchos Throttle Southern Arkansas

EDMOND (Feb. 18) – Emily Deramus went 3-for-3 with one of Central Oklahoma's three home runs to lead a 13-hit attack that powered the No. 11-ranked Bronchos to a 10-2 drubbing of No. 23 Southern Arkansas Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Raising Cane's Festival.

UCO jumped all over the Muleriders, erupting for five runs in the first inning as Layne Smith clubbed the first homer of her career. Deramus added a second-inning dinger and Jacee Minter's three-run shot in the fifth ended the game on the eight-run rule.

The Bronchos improved to 6-5 with the big win, while SAU fell to 9-4. UCO finishes the tournament at 5:30 p.m. against Southwestern Oklahoma.

"We challenged the girls in practice yesterday and I like they way they responded," said head coach Cody White, who put his team through a spirited 45-minute workout Saturday after cold canceled UCO's scheduled game with Missouri S&T. "I think everybody was embarrassed by our performance Friday (in a 9-0 loss to Arkansas Tech) and we needed an attitude adjustment.

"We made a few lineup changes that seemed to pay off as well. We did a lot of good things and beat a really good team."

UCO scored five two-out runs in its initial at bat to take control quickly.

Deramus and Terin Ritz drew one-out walks to get things going before McKenna Johnson plated both with a double to deep center field. Tatum Long followed with a line-drive RBI double to center and then Smith's high fly ball cleared the center field fence for the first homer of her three-year UCO career.

SAU scored once in the top of the second, but Deramus answered that in the bottom half of the inning with a drive to left field that bounced off the top off the top of the fence for her second homer of the season.

The teams traded runs again in the third. Rylee Anglen opened the inning with a single to left field, went to second on Rylee Lemos' one-out base hit to left and trotted home on Deramus' double to right to make it 7-2.

UCO ended it in the fifth. Deramus led off with her third straight hit, Ritz followed with a single through the left side and Minter walked it off with a moon shot to left-center for her fourth homer.

Deramus' 3-for-3 outing led the offense, while Johnson, Long and Anglen each had two hits.

Jordyn Pipkin went the first three innings to earn the pitching win, with Ritz tossing two perfect innings in relief.
