UCO Falls At Angelo State

Bronchos Rally During Singles Matches, But Come Up Short In Texas

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Central Oklahoma came up short on the second part of its two-day trip to Texas Saturday afternoon, falling at Angelo State, 4-2.
 
UCO is now 1-2 on the season. The Bronchos are just getting started on a 10-match road swing and will continue that next week with another trip to Texas for contests against UT Tyler, Tyler Junior College, and St. Mary's.
 
Saturday at Angelo, the hosts took the doubles point with wins at the first two positions in the lineup. UCO did finish out a win at No. 3 doubles, 7-5.
 
ASU then took matches at No. 4 and No. 3 singles to take a 3-0 lead in the match before UCO got on the scoreboard with a win at No. 6 singles. The Bronchos made it 3-2 with another win at No. 5 singles, but a loss at the top position gave ASU the 4-2 lead and the match.
 
The Bronchos did not finish No. 2 singles but were down a set in that match.
 
Anika Ouwejan and Karyna Yurchenko picked up the 7-5 doubles win. Nefeli Zafeiri and Ayaka Koga lost 6-4 at No. 2 doubles and Central's sixth-ranked No. 1 doubles team of Blythe Buntrock and Pete Komada were downed 6-4 in their match.
 
Yurchenko lost 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles before Buntrock lost 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. Koga got UCO on the board with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6, and Ouwejan won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5 to pull the Bronchos back into the match.
 
Komada dropped her first set 6-4, but forced a third with a 6-3 win in the second set. She dropped the final set 6-0. Zafeiri lost the first set at No. 3 singles 6-1 and trailed 6-5 in the unfinished second set.
