UCO Trounces Washburn

Bronchos Cruise To Double-Digit Win At Home

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma had one of its best shooting performances of the 2023-24 season Saturday and it resulted in an 82-68 victory over Washburn in a crucial late season MIAA matchup at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos are now 6-18 on the season and 5-13 in the MIAA. With four games left on the schedule, the win pulled UCO to within one game of Washburn (11-13, 6-12) for 10th in the league standings. The top 10 teams qualify for the MIAA Basketball Championship next month.

"We played really well today and we have been playing really well this month," second-year head women's basketball coach Emma Andrews said. "We know we have to win every game. Our backs are against the wall. The team did a great job today of fighting for it on defense and on the boards, and it's always good when you shoot like we did today."

Central Oklahoma shot 46.7 percent from the floor on Saturday, its third-best performance of the season. UCO went 28-for-60 from the floor, 8-for-19 from behind the 3-point line, and 18-for-22 from the free-throw line.

Reagan Fox led the Bronchos with 22 points on 7 of 10 shooting. The sophomore from Blanchard, Oklahoma hit 4 of 7 from behind the 3-point line, and also went 4-for-6 from the free-throw line. Fox added two assists, two steals, and one rebound.

Caley Young added 16 points, and Aliyah Llanusa and Alena Wilson both scored 12 points. Gracee Miller and Talia Pogi chipped in eight and Lexi Foreman added four to round out the scoring for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma trailed 4-0 early Saturday before a 7-0 run put UCO back in front. The game was tied, 7-7, 10-10, and again 12-12, before another 7-0 run by the Bronchos. Central led 22-20 at the end of the first quarter.

UCO led by seven in the first quarter and found its way back to that lead in the second quarter, 34-27, before an 8-0 Washburn lead. But Pogi followed with three free-throws with one minute to play that gave UCO a 37-34 lead it would take into halftime.

The Bronchos had a fourth 7-0 in the third quarter, and then put together a 9-0 run later in the frame as they pulled away with the game. UCO shot 61.5 percent in the third quarter with three 3-pointers and six makes from the charity stripe. The Bronchos led 62-46 with one quarter left to play.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Bronchos found themselves in front by 22 points, 70-48, with just under eight minutes left in the game. UCO was outscored in the fourth quarter, 22-20, but still cruised to the win over the Ichabods.

UCO plays at Rogers State on Thursday and at Northeastern State next Saturday. The Bronchos wrap up the regular season with home games against Northwest Missouri (Feb. 29) and Newman (March 2). The 2024 MIAA Basketball Championships begin March 6 in Kansas City, Missouri.
