UCO Runs Out of Steam At Fort Hays State

Bronchos Had 14-Point Lead Before 12-Point Loss

HAYS, Kan. – Central Oklahoma's hot start cooled in the second half and the Bronchos fell 76-64 at Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon in an MIAA matchup.

UCO fell to 5-18 on the season overall and 4-13 in the MIAA. Fort Hays State is 18-5 on the year and 12-5 in league play.

"We played at a great level in the first half, but we couldn't sustain it," UCO head women's basketball coach Emma Andrews said. "That's been our biggest problem this season, not playing four quarters. We've been working on being consistent and we need to be where we were in the first half today."

Central Oklahoma led 3-0 and 5-1 in the first few minutes of Saturday's game before Hays tied it up, 5-5, with 6:28 to play in the first quarter. That's when the Bronchos put together one of its finest stretches of the season.

A 14-0 run followed and UCO led 19-5 with 1:31 left in the opening quarter. Alena Wilson hit a 3-pointer – she also hit the one to start the game. Natalie Stice hit two 3-pointers during the run. Lexi Foreman also made one from deep and Aliyah Llanusa added a layup.

UCO led 21-10 at the first break.

Hays got things going in the second quarter and UCO held on to its lead for the 10-minute frame and took a 33-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, UCO scored 12 points again and hit 4 of 12 shots. The Bronchos missed both 3-point attempts and went 4-for-6 from the free-throw line. Hays however hit 10 of 17 shots, including one 3-pointer and the Tigers added one free-throw too before taking a 53-45 lead into the final quarter.

The Bronchos kept it within striking distance but couldn't cut the deficit closer than nine points in the final 10 minutes.

Wilson and Stice led the Bronchos with 16 points apiece. Wilson went 6-for-12 from the floor, 2-for-2 from behind the 3-point line, and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. She added four rebounds, four steals, and two assists.

Stice went 5-for-13 from the floor, 4-for-8 from behind the arc, and 2-for-4 from the free-throw line. She added two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Reagan Fox also scored in double figures, putting up a dozen points on Saturday. Fox was 4-for-7 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Caley Young scored six and Tayler Factor four, Alexis Martin and Foreman both scored three, and Llanusa and Miller added two each to round out Central Oklahoma's scoring load.

UCO shot 40 percent in the game, making 24 of 60 shots. The Bronchos went 8-for-17 from behind the 3-point line and 8-for-12 from the free-throw line.

Central Oklahoma has five games left in the 2023-24 season. The Bronchos host Washburn next Saturday before visiting Rogers State and Northeastern State the following weekend. UCO closes out the season Feb. 29 and March 2 against Northwest Missouri and Newman in Edmond.

UCO is currently two games back of Washburn for 10th place in the MIAA standings. The top 10 teams make the postseason tournament March 6-10 in Kansas City, Missouri.
