Cold-shooting Bronchos Fall To Pitt State

EDMOND (Feb. 1) – An early-game shooting slump put Central Oklahoma in a big hole and the Bronchos never recovered in falling to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Pittsburg State 77-57 Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

UCO trailed 6-5 early in the contest, but then missed eight straight shots while also committing three turnovers. The Gorillas took advantage, reeling off 12 unanswered points to forge ahead 17-5 and never looked back.

The Bronchos fell to 5-15 overall and 4-10 in league play, while PSU improved to 15-5 and 9-5. UCO is back home Saturday, hosting Missouri Southern at 1:30 p.m.

"We got off to a decent start and then went cold," head coach Emma Andrews said. "You can't shoot like we did against a good team like Pitt State. We kept battling, but never really got anything going."

The Bronchos ended up shooting just 29.7 percent (19-of-64) from the field and made only 4-of-22 attempts from long range (18.2 percent).

Reagan Fox led Central with 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Alena Wilson added 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field to go along with seven rebounds and three steals, while Karly Wadsworth also had 12 points.

UCO's only lead of the game came on Wilson's layup a minute in, but Caley Young nailed a 15-foot jumper and Gracee Miller made one of two free throws to keep the Bronchos within 6-5 at the 6:38 mark.

That's when the cold snap started.

UCO didn't score again until Wadsworth drilled a trey from the wing with 1:59 left in the quarter and the Gorillas ended up with a 22-10 lead after the opening period.

The Bronchos stayed cold in the second quarter, hitting just 3-of-16 shots, and trailed 47-23 at intermission.

Fox scored six points on a conventional three-point play and long 3-pointer in the first four minutes of the third period as UCO clawed to within 15 at 49-34, but the Bronchos could get no closer.
