UCO Beats Missouri Southern In Edmond

Bronchos Lead Wire-to-Wire In MIAA Win Over Lions

EDMOND – A wire-to-wire victory gave Central Oklahoma its first MIAA win of the season Sunday afternoon with the Bronchos pulling away from Missouri Southern 87-76 at Hamilton Field House.

UCO is 2-8 on the season following the win, and 1-1 in the MIAA.

"No question this is our best all around game this season," UCO head women's coach Emma Andrews said. "We played all four quarters at the same level. That's where we need to be. We give ourselves a chance. It was great to see us play well all four quarters."

Central Oklahoma jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led 10-3 two minutes into the action on Sunday. The Bronchos never let the Lions from Joplin, Missouri closer than four points the rest of the way.

Korie Allensworth and Jordyn Turner led UCO with big games all over the floor. Allensworth scored 27 points on 9 of 16 shooting to go with six rebounds. She hit three 3-pointers and six free-throws and also had two assists and two steals. Turner scored 26 points on 9 of 12 shooting to go with six rebounds. She hit a pair of 3-pointers and six free-throws and also had one assist and one blocked shot.

Talia Pogi also scored in double figures with 12 points – all from four 3-pointers. Gracee Miller and Alexis Lewis both scored eight points, LaKysia Johnson had five, and Peyton Walker finished with one point.

Central Oklahoma led by as many as 14 points in the first quarter before ending the frame ahead 27-18. MSSU got it down to four on two different occasions in the second quarter but couldn't get any closer. The Bronchos took a 45-38 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Going into the second half, Central Oklahoma stretched its lead back up to 13 points just four minutes into the third quarter. Turner's layup made it 55-42 and prompted an MSSU timeout.

UCO led 60-54 going into the fourth quarter and while Southern got it down to four with the first basket of the final frame, Miller followed with a 3-pointer to put it back to seven and UCO held firm the rest of the way. The Bronchos stretched it back up to 13 one more time late in the game before settling on the 11-point victory, 87-67.

With 27 on Sunday, Allensworth reached 1,000 career points for her collegiate career. The Sulphur, Oklahoma native scored 872 points in three seasons at Cameron before transferring to UCO earlier this year. In addition to three points in eight games with Louisiana Tech in the 2020-21 season, and 133 points this season, Allensworth has 1,008 points in her college career following a Top 50 in Oklahoma history mark with 2,143 career points in her prep career.

Central Oklahoma snapped a seven-game losing streak to Missouri Southern with Sunday's win. The Bronchos had won 10 in a row in the series before MSSU's seven-game run that started in February 2021.

Central Oklahoma has next week off before heading to UC Colorado Springs Dec. 17 to take on the Cougars in the final non-conference game of the season for the Bronchos. UCO will host Rogers State Dec. 22, then return in 2025 for the remaining 16 games.
